Day 1
First day of new job.
Sleep 4 hours because you're so nervous,
spend several hours in form filling meetings,
have a sheaf of paperwork an inch thick to go through,
put your finger prints into national databases,
show up to find no computer in your cube,
get a list of software to install that's as long as your arm,
plan to upgrade the OS to 10.6 for a system you haven't really used since 7,
be told you'll be taking over tech support for web development for UCSC,
set up a dozen different accounts for a dozen different departments and responsibilities,
each with different passwords,
know that you're going to have to set them all up again,
miss lunch,
stay late,
find out you're working with someone you hoped to never see again,
get assigned two projects,
one which is 10 months overdue already and a huge political nightmare,
another which is due by the end of the week,
crash your computer,
find out that there's no way to secure a $4k laptop to your desk,
come home to cat barf everywhere,
work out until it hurts,
but not have it improve your mood,
come home to cat shit everywhere,
be undecided if you should drink heavily or cry.
I'd say it can't get any worse, but I've already done that a lot today >
