What a bloody weekend!!
John who has recently become obsessed with E-bay (a kitchen table, 4 books, a DVD and a coffee table later) and he decides to organise all our crap, and tells me that he wants to buy some ex-shop racking off this man on E-bay. As I have actually been impressed with his previous buys I said, what the hell - you're paying for it!
So Saturday morning we're in the car (a silver estate car that you can fit lots of stuff in the back with the seats down.) driving to Dudley (which is in the middle of England- about 2 hours from our house) While driving through Dudley we see a castle high on the hill and it looks really cool - and seeings as we have the travelling bears with us (Franklin and Benjiman) we think it would be funny to take pictures of them on the battlements. But first we have to pick up the racking - so we find the place and the man loads the car full of these really heavy steel shelving units - and the uprights go on the roof rack. Now let me just say - there are about 60 metal shelves piled up in the back of the car - and I voiced my concerns. John promptly complied and wedged another shelve behind his and my seat to stop the shelving coming forward and decapitating me. So excited about going to the castle we set off from the man's house and nattered away about it - John wanted to see the ten canal locks (an 18th century way of getting down a very steep gradiant in a canal when people used to transport stuff by barge.) He took a picture of the travelling bears on the locks and I said let's stop for lunch.
John said No, I want to eat a curry in Dudley (because Birmingham has a huge migrant population of Indians and Pakistani's and there are Curry houses everywhere) I agreed because I knew he wouldn't be able to find a curry house open by 2pm on a Saturday afternoon, and then I would win our bet and he would have to take me to an expensive restaurant and buy me a proper dinner! (Mwhahahah!) By 1.45pm he was admitting defeat - so I said why don't we go up to the castle now and we'll take some pictures and then go somewhere to eat. John agreed - thinking he was off the hook.
So we turned onto Castlehill Road - which is a quite steep hill leading up to the castle and we were driving along minding our own business when out of nowhere an Indian man in a Taxi crashed into us. The shelving units came forward one went over my head and hit the windscreen, another hit me in the back of the head and another hit me in the back of the neck. Plus I was thrown forward in my seat, the seatbelt cut into me giving me a huge bruise right across my right breast and my knees hit the dash. I sat there bewildered in the car, when out of nowhere a fire engine (which was just behind us and saw the accident) stopped and cordened off the road. A really nice Fireman opened my door and held my head still, asking me questions about my injuries. They moved the shelving units from behind me, and John got out (luckily he had no injuries) All these Fireman where buzzing around us, making sure the car didn't move and hurt me more.
Then an Ambulance turned up with these two really nice lady paramedic's inside - and they put a neck collar on me and then with the Fireman's help they straped me to a backboard and bundled me off to hospital in the Ambulance. John came into the back of the Ambulance before we left the scene and said do you want me to come with you? And I said No, go and make sure that the car is ok.(All I was thinking about was that we were 2 hours from home with no way to get there is the car was buggered!) so he did. And ten very bumpy and uncomfortable minutes later I was wheeled into the Accident and Emergency department of the local hospital. I was examined and they left me alone for a few minutes while they booked me into X-ray. My Cell phone rang and it's my big sister Julie - but I couldn't answer it as you're not supposed to have cell phones on in a hospital. So five minutes later I get a very angry text message from her, asking why I am ignoring her calls. Then she calls me back again. And I manage to blurt out "I've been in a car crash I'm in hospital in Dudley and the car is a right off!" to which she replied "Jenny has broken her wrist and she has to have an operation!"
What's the odds of these things happening in one day???
So I managed to get rid of Julie and They took me down to X-ray and they X-rayed my neck and spine and my chest, and then left me in a cubicle until the X-ray's were looked at. At this stage I'd had the neck collar on for nearly 3 hours and I was in more pain from that, than my injuries! (have you ever worn one of those? They really, really hurt!!!)
John turned up with the entire contents of the car (about 6 bag loads) and tells me that the car is a right off (basically beyond fixing!) and that it has been towed away by the insurance company. So I start to panic and ask how the hell are we getting home? And he says the insurance company are going to send a taxi to drive us home, once you're discharged. So I sighed in relief.
The doctor comes in and takes off the collar and says that I am going to be in pain for at least a week because I have severe whiplash and I injured my back when I was thrown forward - he gives me a pile of painkillers and then discharges me.
An hour later we have being driven home by an Indian taxi driver - Can you say Irony???
So today I am in a lot of pain and very stiff - we have no car - and I am going to miss a few days of work because of this :(
So my weekend sucked! How about yours?
