Near-Something Experience

Mar 04, 2008 10:04

It wasn't really a near-death experience.  But it was, shall we say, a close brush with the shadier side of life...

The setting: a crowded bus stop outside the Wilk.  We exit the bus, thanking the bus driver, and head for the crosswalk.  Rachel and I are on our way to Family Life 100.  As we stand at the crosswalk, waiting for the walk sign to flash, a guy in front of me impatiently says, "Whatever, I'm just going to go," and begins crossing the street.  Like lemmings, 5 other students follow.

I took a step into the street.

Then my powers of observation kicked in and made their observations known.  I noticed four things:

  1. The crosswalk still showed the red hand.
  2. The light was green.
  3. There were definitely cars coming.
  4. Rachel was not moving.  (This was a very good indication that neither should I.)
I hastily stepped back onto the sidewalk, realizing there was no need to risk life and limb when I wasn't even remotely close to being late to class.  As I did so, an oncoming car honked angrily at the lawbreakers.  We patiently waited 30 seconds for the walk sign to appear before crossing in safety.

Lo and behold, we passed the group of six on the other side of the street where they had been stopped by a campus police officer and were in the middle of a stern lecture and possibly receiving unpleasant repercussions.  What became of them, I know not.  Perhaps they will make it into police beat next week...

Then we made it to class without further incident (carefully navigating Brigham Square and successfully avoiding getting any propaganda from BYUSA campaigners), only to discover it was canceled.  So I guess I could have just slept in, because I don't have class until 4 today...

The end.

I think it will be a good day.
