Think of how much money you would save if you just celebrated every holiday a few days after the rest of the world. Seriously: all candy and decorations would be on sale. It's a brilliant, thrifty, money-saving strategy. And yet, nobody does it. Probably because we've spent our entire lives being brainwashed into thinking that celebrating Christmas any day but the 25th of December is blaspheme (even though that's not even when Christ was born anyway), or that Halloween cannot possibly be any day but October 31st. (Although, in all fairness, my mom does buy wrapping paper after Christmas for way cheap for the next year.)
A notable exception to this is birthdays. People will celebrate birthdays for a week if they feel like it. Of course, there's no special "day after your birthday sales", so you can't really save money by stretching out the celebration... unless you are fortunate enough to have a birthday coincide with a holiday.
Anyway. I'm going to go against the norm and celebrate Valentine's Day tomorrow. When all the chocolate in the bookstore is 50% off. I need something to fortify me while taking my second Ochem test of the semester...
