Return to the Oh Muh Gawd Steakhouse

I am happy to report that the Oh Muh Gawd Steakhouse is alive and well, and still serving the best steaks I’ve had anywhere, ever. I had feared it had closed but it turns out the last time I tried to find it I failed on two counts

- I had looked on the wrong street corner
- I’d forgotten its real name so couldn’t ask where it was

So for the record, its real name is Le Steak-Frites St Paul and it’s on the corner of St Paul and St Laurent in Old Montreal. The “Oh Muh Gawd” comes from the reaction my companion and I had when we first into our steaks on my first visit six years ago … since then it’s been the reference standard, the Perfect Ten. Somewhere down the line I lost the note I’d taken of its location. It was sheer luck I passed it this time.

To set the scene, it’s in a small grey building on a street corner. I’d guess at it being an old townhouse. Fairly simple décor - white walls, plain tables, blackboards to each side bearing the menu, white wine and red wine lists. Nothing overly fancy. The menu only needs one board because it’s quite short and two the point - five starters, four desserts and twelve mains, of which eight are cuts of beef and the others (added since my last visit) are a mixed grill, duck and salmon. So, not really a place for devout Hindus or vegetarians.

I managed to sit by the window - was on my own this time so settled down with a book but it’s nice to watch the world go by, especially in the summer. Glass of red wine, a lovely coarse meaty pate, wonderfully dressed salad then a filet mignon with frites and a mushroom sauce (almost exactly what I’d had last time, except for the sauce, but mushroom/pepper steak sauce is a solid favourite). Maybe I just like the way the meat is prepared, trimmed perfectly with a tiny rim of fat on one edge, dark at the edge with a pink centre. Yum.

As I said to the waiter on the way out, “see you again next time”.
