Rereading Lolita these days.

Now, when we start a sentence with the word 'Overtly', most of us standard-issue mortals would like to open the corresponding clause with something like Inwardly, perhaps. Or Internally, or even Invertly, if we were trying to plain and simple cheeky.

sigh

But Nabakov:

Inly.

This is such a mindbogglingly brilliant book. The following beginning of a sentence is one of the greatest ever written in the history of the language, and the rest of the book remains at equal level. Sublime.

My very photogenic mother died in a freak accident (picnic, lightning) when I was three...
