Ardent readers of my late and lamented site heptapod.org will remember the constant oneiric references to Rainy Mountain.

To catch everyone up, Rainy Mountain was a name I gave to a town where it was always gray and raining. The people there were welcoming and friendly, but I think that's because I couldn't stay much longer than a dream. How long is a typical dream? I haven't the foggiest.

Today I was leaving the County Clerk's office in Freehold after a day of title searching. It was gray, it was raining, and when I was angling my body to enter the car I saw a clock tower which made me freeze a moment. "Oh god, is this Rainy Mountain?"

There weren't any mountains. I don't think there's anything over 100 feet in Monmouth or Ocean counties. Yet everything seemed to fall into place in one perfect moment. Which is sad because I hate Monmouth and I dislike Freehold.
