One convention in these here United States concerns people identifying as hyphenated Americans. Sometimes to the point their nostalgia for their grandparents's land appears to supercede their American patriotism.
And it's completely okay on a social level.
Esperanto is an auxiliary language with the goal of facilitating communication between people of different origins and languages. By no means did its creator, Zamenhof, intend for it to take over all other languages. The goal of Esperanto is to bring people together without impinging on their culture and language.
Kinda like the screwy logic behind legalized abortions where pro-lifers act like everyone's going to be forced to abort babies like the red Chinese. "If you don't want an abortion, don't get one"!
Esperanto is about peace, friendship, and language. Not erasing culture or language. In fact, Esperantists celebrate different outlooks, politics (though I reckon I'd be hard-pressed to find an Esperantist who supports the current POTUS...), and culture.
While the USA doesn't have a national language, many people speak other languages than a bastardized Norman pidgin used to bed Anglo-Saxon wenches. Yet non-English speakers are disparaged as second-class citizens. But if people had a simple, auxiliary language, everyone would be on an even playing field and foster siblinghood than animosity.
