First and foremost, I very nearly understood almost all of this brief blog post written in Esperanto.
http://www.ipernity.com/blog/debilov/4693958 I just couldn't figure out some words and needed to consult my vortaro.
Secondly, I spent my Monday afternoon doing math. Not exactly pencil-and-paper math, but lots of Google, Wolfram-Alpha, and sundry online calculators. My project? To figure out the night sky's appearance on TRAPPIST-1e. TRAPPIST-1 is a red dwarf star host to seven planets and its discovery was announced last year. Recent surveys of data suggest there's at least one potential Earth-habitable world 40 light years away.
It's a tiny planetary system with TRAPPIST-1 and its seven planets stuffed into an area smaller than Mercury's orbit. TRAPPIST-1 is only a wee bit bigger than Jupiter. All seven known planets are Earth-sized.
Here's what I know for sure about the system, from the vantage of TRAPPIST-1e:
TRAPPIST-1 would be twice the size of our Sun in the skies of TRAPPIST-1e, but just as bright as Sol.
Both planets TRAPPIST-1d and TRAPPIST-1f would be half the diameter of Earth's moon. TRAPPIST-1d is an inferior planet, meaning it's between TRAPPIST-1 and TRAPPIST-1e, much like Venus and Mercury are between Earth and Sol. TRAPPIST-1f is a superior planet since it lay beyond the orbit of TRAPPIST-1e.
TRAPPIST-1d would only be seen at starrise and starset, while TRAPPIST-1f would be seen throughout the night. Imagine starsets where both of these planets would hang heavy near the horizon. Or starrises.
Since a 'year' on TRAPPIST-1e is a mere 6 days, 2 hours, 9 minutes, and 36 seconds, these sights would be common.
What I am hoping to figure out is if TRAPPIST-1d and TRAPPIST-1f could cast planetshine on TRAPPIST-1e. Also confirm my numbers and calculations. So far, the TRAPPIST-1 system could be similar to those cheesy science fiction posters with multiple planets looming large in the sky.
Finally, I watched two episodes of Star Trek: TNG (The Host and Half A Life) with Lilah laying next to me and Marbles resting atop my thigh in the most relaxed fashion.
