Ever put something down, like keys, then forget where you put them?
And the keys wind up in the weirdest place, like the freezer or atop the cat food on the shelf?
That's when your conscious, left hemisphere switches off and the subconscious right hemisphere takes control for a few moments. Perhaps it's being playful, or it decided "This is a good enough spot".
It's not ghosts. It's not elves. It's a lack of awareness in the conscious mind.
It happens all the time. Think about the times you needed to get to Point A, but wound up taking the route to Point B. Sometimes the realization comes after a few blocks, other times your spouse/life partner/friend says, "Uh... we're going to Point A" leading to an awkward U-turn or whatnot.
That's when you're on 'autopilot'. It's actually the subconscious right hemisphere taking over, in good faith, but not fully aware of the circumstances. The right hemisphere thinks symbolically and runs on habit, which is why people can do multiple things at one time. If you thought about the act of walking, left foot in front of the right foot then lift knee to bring right foot in front of the left foot, ad nauseum, you'd trip all over yourself.
It's how the brain hemispheres collaborate and contribute to conscious experience.
