Okay one of the things I dislike about the old World of Darkness was the preponderance of splatbooks. Plus the internet was host to millions of idiotic bloodlines, tribes and traditions which were offshoots and really rare but really special JUST LIKE THE PEOPLE PLAYING THE GAME BECAUSE MOMMY SAID SO.
I acquired Bloodlines: The Hidden and Bloodlines: The Legendary and was disappointed by these sourcebooks. The bloodlines had White Wolf reverting to its old ways while staying true to its 5/5 game structure. i.e. 5 clans, 5 covenants and so forth.
Honestly the game is good on its own with the basic stuff. Adding the splatbooks makes it spread way too thin and doesn't contribute to roleplaying. If people were self-assured in the character they were portraying then they wouldn't need to focus on other stuff like bloodlines and wacky new disciplines that only 5 people in the universe will ever know.
The best parallel I can draw is with Dungeons and Dragons's Forgotten Realms campaign setting. Everyone's a fucking half-this and half-that with whatever ancestry adding spice to the mix. Let's not mention the 50 different subraces of elf. One may argue this is a sign of creativity on the part of the players but in my eyes it's simply not being creative enough with their in-game personas and a sign that the rpg publisher wants to squeeze every last cent from their player base.
Thank goodness for P2P, eh?
