I don’t think the Barnard/Columbia rivalry makes sense, but I can concede to understanding certain aspects of its origin. Yet, if the existence of Barnard is going to be bothersome, it’s self-defeating to use a ridiculous justification or to manifest this displeasure in absurd ways. The All-Powerful Facebook, for example, houses plenty anti-Barnard and anti-Columbia groups, ranging from amusing- perhaps mocking the rivalry or diminishing it to a trivial joke, to unnecessarily vicious -where there seem to be a few serious insecurities underlying the friendly attitude.
We had dinner at John Jay today, and for some reason they were using disposable cutlery. So instead of simply placing your tray and all its contents directly onto the conveyor belt, you first had to dispose of everything on your tray. Waiting her turn at the garbage can, a girl turned to her friend and commented on the similarity of today’s procedure to Barnard’s system, where you do throw everything off your plates. The guy was appalled. Slowly regaining his composure, he mustered the strength for a warning, “no, it’s not like Barnard, don’t EVER say that.” And then he melted. G-d forbid we throw our trash out like the girls college across the street...the mere possibility of it truly throws my whole world view into question.
