I opened the document called “media 30pg paper” and browsed my 5 pages, guiltily trying to ignore the deceptive file name. With my headphones plugged into Natasha’s computer, I noticed that the ceiling pattern of the Butler lounge has little Columbia crowns. Equipped with that knowledge, I proceeded to write my paper. "Write my paper” implies, “discussed random people in the lounge with Dasha.”
There was the girl with 3 Red Bulls and a Poland spring. Not particularly notable, but our selection wore thin as the night progressed. There was also the guy who sat in the only loud room of the library, covering his ears the entire time. Any other room would be quiet enough to free his hands for a better purpose, but I understood his issue once guy 2, who did not realize how loudly he spoke or was exceedingly generous with information about his personal life, arrived. The loud guy also managed to “shhhh!” a group of girls, and then resumed yelling about how he simply couldn’t believe his friend’s girlfriend. Oh, and there was the guy who spoke Russian...a fact only revealed after Dasha had made a few well-intentioned but easily-misconstrued teasing, or carelessly critical, remarks. We became friends, and as soon as maintaining such an impressively high maturity level became tiring, there was a brief shift back to attention-deprived papers.
But no ridiculous late night studying is complete without quality conversations.
“oh and also, bad jokes”
“we started doing bad jokes?”
“Yes, and we started talking good.”
Upon glancing at my footnotes, Dasha also assumed that Ibid is “the smartest book ever,” since everyone cites it regardless of paper topic.
My playlist ran laps, but I was the one getting tired. Dasha left at 3am. My separation anxiety was mitigated by evenly spaced phone calls with equally predictable content. “So, are you coming back now?” Nope, not yet. “What about now?” Oh, now…no. “Come now!” Ok Dash'…soon.
I deluded myself for a little while, did some work, and followed. Today was..is fun too. Butler’s a theme park.
