So I finally decided to actually go see musicals (besides the ones my friend is in) since San Francisco is getting some big shows and I now have money to spend.
First show I saw was Avenue Q - which was awesome - so funny and so true what they say/sing.
I've heard it was naughty but didn't think they'd really go there with the puppet sex! I am really amazed by the actors doing pupperty, singing and some of them doing 2 roles on the same stage. Its some talent, I hope they felt the love from us considering how they didn't do well in the City of Sin (Las Vegas). Got a bit obstructed views with Rush orchestra seats but for $25 I can't complain. I say go see it if you get the chance, it closes tomorrow, heading off to the next city.
The other show I saw was Sweeney Todd - the Doyle version where again the actors multi-task - this time playing instruments. I wanted to see it since Tim Burton is doing his own musical version coming to film in Dec. I saw the preview show and got cheap tix for $10. Unfortunately the sound wasn't the best in the cheap seats as we were way up in the 2nd balcony. Also the mics weren't turned high enough during the first half. It improved during the 2nd half, still the only one I could hear clearly was Judy Kaye (Mrs. Lovette). The others seem to get drowned out by the instruments at times. My coworker and I agreed that Benjamin Eakeley (Beadle) was very cute. ;) I was also impressed by Edmund Bagnell (Tobias) he just graduated from college this year.
An interesting show, if not exactly the peppiest show at times. I think you need to know more of the story before you go if the sound is still isn't improved by opening night. Really wish they had Company come here too.
Next I'm planning on rushing Jersey Boys before they head out at the end of Sept. then there's Mamma Mia. I'm also going to a benefit concert that is suppose to have Deborah Gibson as a guest with the cast from that show. Yes that Debbie Gibson! I'm in musical overload but if I can't get to Broadway/West End, this is the next best thing - for now. ;)
