You did not fail. You simply found another way that did not work ;) You just need to keep trying and find a way that works. Don't give up. Is there some sort of Job Club anywhere near you that could help you build your portfolio more effectively? What about a video portfolio - part interview, part presentation of what you can do? Or a website? You could code it yourself, and there are any number of low-cost hosting companies out there :)

Besides, it's not like you're doing nothing with your time ;)

The positives far outweigh the negatives, my friend - especially that first positive. I can tell you from personal experience that no job situation (be it employment, unemployment, great job, hated job, whatever) means squat if you're not sharing your life with the right person. And you are. Which means everything on that list of bad stuff pales in comparison. It'll see itself right with time; you have love, which is so unfortunately rare in this modern world.

Also: the job market in that country is mad if it can't see what an asset you'd be to any and every workplace at which you wished to try your hand :)
