It was not as if the rumors fell upon deaf ears - Will Turner was more than aware of what was being said about himself and the governor's daughter. The ladies of Port Royal's society tried to hide their comments and thoughts behind fans and tea cups, but nothing stopped their tales.

It was behind several such fans that a story of how Elizabeth threatened Captain Jack Sparrow during their overnight exile first reached Will's ears while he said his goodbyes to a customer.

"You know, Miss Swann kept a long stick by the fire and didn't sleep all night for fear that pirate would turn to her!" The young woman who stated this as fact was walking down Lime Street with several others of her station, followed closely by three maids. Contrary to their words, each woman looked the paragon of sophistication - their gowns were made of fine silks with tight waists, wide hips, and small hats perched atop curled hair.

"I heard he had his way with her - and she enjoyed it!" Will noticed that the eyes of the lady who spoke this grew and a slight blush moved along her cheeks.

"Oh, Miss Rachel Harrison! You're scandalous. Really?"

"That is what I heard and I will not break from it." The almost cackle that reached Will's ears nearly made Will glad all forms of weaponry at his disposal were far out of his reach.

Will eyed the young women, many of whom had been Elizabeth's friends before the kidnapping and pirate involvement, as they made way out of the market center of town and toward their homes.

While it was the first time he heard such a thing, he was nearly certain if word just now reached his ears, Elizabeth had endured far worse in the six months since the "unfortunate" incident. Will only had to use his imagination to know what treachery the women were telling one another and the thought Elizabeth had heard those things nearly made him ill.

Following that day, Will considered telling Elizabeth about her acquaintances and their sharp tongues, but, in true Elizabeth Swann fashion, she beat him to it. A few weeks after Will's first experience, as the young couple enjoyed a stroll through her father's gardens, her anger and pent up frustration erupted.

"If Emilia Gardner does not stop telling lies about you and myself, I think I may need to smack the smirk off her chin-less face."

Will suppressed the grin that threatened to break his calm demeanor as he stopped their walk through the roses and moved his arm from being laced with hers to grip her hand. "Darling, I would rather you speak with her about these lies before you resort to violence."

"Oh, Will. It's not just her; she's just the only one who has the nerve to make remarks to me or with me in the room. Today, she actually said that I was to make a terrible wife for you because I am learning to cook and do laundry. Can you believe it?!"

It wasn't what the girl had said to Elizabeth that made Will pause, but what Elizabeth confessed to him.

"You're learning to do those things?"

Color rose to her cheeks and her eyes widened in surprise of herself before she stuttered a response. "Well, one does need to care for one's husband and knowing how to do those things is required."

Will smiled at his bride-to-be and raised her fingers to be kissed. It was as his soft lips brushed the tip of her forefinger that he noticed something different. "You've calluses."

Elizabeth immediately looked down and pulled her hand away from Will, hiding it behind her skirt. "Those things happen with work, Will. You know this well." She pointedly looked at his own rough hands.

He reached around her to effectively hug her to him and held her hands in his. The scent of lavender reached his nose for a brief moment before he stepped back, still holding her hands. "And what have you been learning to cook?"

She smiled at him and took her hands back. "Just odds and ends, nothing too elaborate. Things I know you enjoy and maybe a few things Father's cook insists all young wives make their husbands."

Will kissed her nose and returned her smile before he again took her arm and slowly began to again lead her down the worn garden path to the hedge fence. "I'm more than happy with unelaborate foods."

Elizabeth stopped walking and laughed before she answered. "I dearly hope, for everything I've made has come out burnt."
