Hitouji Yuuji loved his boyfriend with every part of his being. He couldn’t imagine himself being with anyone else. Growing up, he had been shy and closeted but after meeting Konjiki Koharu, his life had changed and he himself had changed. Somehow, this boy had made him feel comfortable with himself; comfortable enough to come out to his friends and family that he was gay and then a few days later admit to his friend that he was in love with him.

The first few years of their relationship had been amazing and Yuuji wouldn’t change his memories for anything. Most of them, at least. As the years went past, Koharu’s flirting nature seemed to just get worse and worse until the point that a day out during the summer break of their first year of high school had ended with Yuuji storming away in near-tears because Koharu was busy flirting with a young waiter at the café they had visited for coffee.

Yuuji had begged his boyfriend to stop. At first, he had felt silly and over possessive, but years on from that, he felt it was justified. He would scold Koharu whenever he flirted with someone else, try and find some way to punish him, but he began to get tired of it and just stopped trying.

One day near the end of the summer in their second high school year, it just became too much and Yuuji snapped. They were alone in the changing room after practice and Yuuji had had to spend the whole time watching Koharu checking out their older teammates and make crude remarks and even pressed himself up against one. He’d had enough control to not do anything at the time, but as soon as the last teammate had left, Yuuji had shut the door and exploded.

He couldn’t even remember what he was saying but he could remember hearing it echo off the walls of the otherwise empty locker room and he was panting by the end of it.

Koharu had left a few moments later, looking hurt and betrayed and sad and angry, as though he were being unfairly accused of a crime.

Yuuji hadn’t left. He just collapsed back against his locker in tears, unable to believe what he’d just done. Koharu. After nearly five years of being together, he’d broken up with Koharu. He felt so bad. He just wanted to rush after him and apologize and say it was all his fault and beg him to come back because he was nothing without Koharu, the guy who made him what he was today.

Yuuji wasn’t sure how long he sat there with his knees bent and his arms wrapped around them and tears streaming endlessly from his face. The sound of running footsteps nearing the locker room made him bite his tongue, though. Was it Koharu coming back to apologize for everything?

A pair of headphones fell from ears and some sort of western rap began to echo off the walls. A voice accompanied it, the English surprisingly good for someone who had trouble passing English in school.

Kenya was back from his after training run. How could Yuuji forget that there was still someone to come to the changing rooms? He pressed himself back against the locker and hoped that Kenya wouldn’t notice him. He didn’t need a friend to see him, not like this.

Unfortunately, the gods weren’t on Yuuji’s side. Kenya’s locker was right next his, with Shiraishi’s on the other side.

“Y-Yuuji?” The music suddenly stopped and Kenya crouched down beside his friend with a hand on his shoulder. “Oi, Yuuji, are you okay?” But Yuuji couldn’t find any words to answer him with. He settled on a shake of his head, which only served to make Kenya’s lips pull into a frown and arms wrapped around Yuuji to pull him against a bare chest.

Bare? Summer. Right. Kenya always ran shirtless in summer so he could ‘tan while he ran’. It was stupid rhyme he’d come up with, but being so close to it now, Yuuji had to agree that it was actually a good idea that had actually worked.

“Was it Koharu?” Yuuji almost missed the soft-spoken question and gave a slow nod. He couldn’t bring himself to lie. He was a little surprised by the growled response, though. “I knew it. I passed him on the way back and he just ignored me. He was too busy being angry about something. What’d you do?”

Yuuji gulped and curled into the chest. “…. I dumped him,” he barely managed. He was a little worried when Kenya froze but he found himself relaxing when the blond did as well.

“Finally,” Kenya murmured, sounding almost pleased. “I thought you never would. I was almost ready to intervene.”

Yuuji blinked and shifted to give him a look of utter confusion. Kenya just smiled back and lifted a hand to pull the headband from Yuuji’s hair. “He was hurting you,” Kenya said quietly, running his fingers into the other’s hair slowly. “And he just didn’t give a shit. I hate seeing you like that.”

What his friend was saying really wasn’t helping to make Yuuji any less confused but the hand in his hair was a little relaxing and it occurred to him that Koharu had never once played with his hair like this, even during or after sex. So he decided to enjoy it while he could, because he really couldn’t understand what the hell Kenya was talking about as he continued talking.

“-and I swear he was going to end up doing something with Takeo-senpai soon…” Kenya finally finished and gave a sigh. For a long moment, he sat in silence with one arm (which was made of a good amount of beautifully toned muscle, Yuuji noted) wrapped tightly around the other boy while his other hand was in Yuuji’s hair. “... Hey Yuuji. When was the last time you kissed him? Like… properly kissed him.”

“U-Uh… a few days ago…? Why?” Now he was beyond confused.

“Oh, good,” Kenya smiled. “I don’t want have to worry about tasting him~”

“Wha-mmpff.” The rest of his words became an inaudible mumble as lips suddenly met his. It was soft and slow and testing and maybe a little anxious, but when he finally returned it even just a little, the anxiety faded away and the lips against his became a bit more confident. Yuuji wasn’t quite sure exactly what was happening, but there was a hand in his hair (which was just so relaxing) and a chest beneath his hand (smooth and toned just enough that he could distinguish the lines of pecs and abs as he traced his fingers over skin. And when it was all over, the only thing he could do was pant and stare at Kenya even more confused than before. “Wh-Wha…. I thou.... you… Kura…. Hi-Hikaru-chan…”

Kenya was panting a lot less and Yuuji found himself mildly jealous of just how long he could hold his breath. “Kura’s with Senri,” he said. “And Hikaru’s as straight as Koharu is gay. Trust me. Already tried that. The bruise took three weeks to heal. I thought you and Koharu were gonna end up being one of those ‘start in highschool and die of old age together’ couples so I was trying to get over you and it really didn’t work and when Koharu started hurting you, I really wanted to do something, but Kura said to leave it for you to figure out and now that you’re single, I can actually do this...”

Yuuji just continued to stare at him as Kenya answered all the questions he didn’t have the breath to ask and just let it sink in for a moment. Then, with a slight smile, he curled up against Kenya’s chest and closed his eyes.

Maybe breaking up wasn’t so bad after all.
