The first time Niou went to Chiba was for the New Year’s party and he wasn’t quite sure what to expect. He’d taken Yagyuu with him, because his boyfriend had suggested it might be a good idea to bring the company since he was going to hang out with a group of people who he didn’t actually know that well.
So New Year’s Eve found the two friends standing at the train station and waiting to be picked up. It was Yagyuu who spotted them first, pointing out the mess of red hair standing out above the crowd and the black head beside it. A grin pulled at Niou’s lips, one that made the gentleman just a little jealous now that he wasn’t the only one who could make Niou do that, and then the trickster was gone into the crowd with his bag hoisted on his shoulder.
By the time Yagyuu joined his friend, Niou had dropped his own bag by Kurobane’s feet and his arm’s were wrapped around the much taller boy’s neck. He’d just missed the kiss. Thank goodness. A sight he didn’t really want to see, not just yet. A quick glance at the tall boy’s companion told him quite clearly he wasn’t really the only one.
“Ah, there you are, Yagyuu,” Kurobane greeted with a grin while Niou dropped his arms and picked his bag back up. “Was wondering if you did actually come. I know it’s hard to get away from family for New Year’s.”
“Quite the opposite, in fact. My parents seemed excited that I was able to spend New Year’s with friends,” Yagyuu pushed his glasses up his nose and gave a small bow. “Thank you for inviting me, Kurobane-san.”
Kurobane chuckled. “Seriously, man. Bane’s fine,” he insisted. “And don’t thank me. It was this guy’s idea.” He jabbed a thumb in the direction of the junior who had been standing quite calmly and silently to the side, keeping Kurobane and a few feet between himself and Niou.
“Ah… Thank you, Amane-kun.”
“Dabide,” The red-head’s tone and expression seemed oddly serious though Yagyuu didn’t seem at all phased.
He nodded. “Ah, thank you, Dabide-kun,” Yagyuu corrected himself.
“Let’s get going then,” Kurobane finally decided, one of his hands holding Niou’s. “It’s almost four. I told Sae I’d be back by half past. We’re probably not gonna be coming home tonight but we can drop your stuff off at my place so we don’t have to worry about it.”
As Kurobane continued to talk as he walked, Yagyuu made sure to keep behind where the tall boy was walking hand-in-hand with Niou. When Dabide fell into step beside him, he didn’t say anything, simply taking a little bit of pride in the fact that he wasn’t the only best friend who was losing out here.

Midnight seemed to be refusing to come. It was only just gone half-ten and already Yagyuu felt like he’d been there forever. He was only on his second beer, the bottle having been shoved into his hand by some senior or other from the high school before he’d had a chance to say no, and he had taken up a spot up on the dunes away from the main ruckus of the party.
The party was bigger than he’d thought it would be. It was as though the entire middle school had shown up, along with the high school and some university students. They were taking up at least half of the length of the beach, with a huge bonfire having been set up for everyone to keep warm around.
Yagyuu heard a weight drop into the sand beside him and he slowly turned his head to face his new company. “Amane-kun?” he asked, slightly surprised to see the boy this far away from the group, especially since he seemed to have been quite friendly with most people present.
“Mind if I sit here?” Dabide didn’t even bother to correct Yagyuu on the name he had used and took a sip from his own beer bottle after the affirmative nod he received in reply. The boy’s voice wasn’t slurred, but the way his movements seemed slightly affected gave away that he wasn’t completely sober.
“… How much have you drunk?” he asked slowly, not really sure if it was his place to pry or not. He blinked in surprise as the red-head held the bottle in his mouth so he could hold up seven fingers. “H-How can you drink so much and still be this sober?” He was only halfway through this second bottle and already he could feel his voice slurring over the odd syllable.
Dabide shrugged, staring out over the water. “Practice, I guess,” he said. “I’ve been drinking heavy stuff since I was ten. Beer can’t get me anything past tipsy anymore.”
Yagyuu stared in disbelief. “… You’re fourteen. How often do you drink?”
“Not as much as Bane-san,” the red-head chugged down the last of his beer and bent his knees up. His elbows rest on top of them and let the bottle dangle from his fingertips. “Or Shudou-san. Those two will probably get alcohol poisoning before they get drunk from beer.”
“… Should I be worried for Niou?”
Dabide shook his head slowly and turned his head to give Yagyuu a smile, the most honest one he’d seen on the boy’s face all day. “Nope,” he said. “Bane-san’s the most responsible guy I know when it comes to drinking. He won’t drink in front of any of the kids and he only gets completely off-his-face drunk when it’s just me and him and Sae-san. And he knows everyone else’s limits better than they do and he won’t let anyone of us drink too much, especially if we’re down here.”
For a moment, Yagyuu just watched the red-head before he gave a smile and pushed his glasses up his nose. “You really like him, don’t you?” He asked quietly, slowly looking away to stare out at the water. “That’s why you invited me out… You wanted to know if you were the only one suffering with those two.” He heard Dabide shift closer but didn’t look at him. “Don’t worry… You aren’t. I don’t know if I ever liked Niou like that but you sort of get used to being the only person who that guy will actually be himself around. So I can at least relate to the jealousy side of things. But if things don’t work between them… Then I do hope you can get your happiness.”
The red-head slowly shook his head and dropped it onto Yagyuu’s shoulder. The gentleman was caught by surprise and he jumped, but he made no effort to move it as Dabide spoke. “Bane-san won’t,” he said quietly. “I’ve already tried.”
Yagyuu wasn’t quite sure what to say to that, so he opted to say nothing and just sat still. They stayed in silence for the longest time, and Yagyuu didn’t realize how much time had passed until the crowd gathered around the bonfire seemed to calm down.
“It’s almost time for the countdown,” Dabide murmured, his head still resting on the senior’s shoulder. Yagyuu gave a slow nod in understanding. “… Do you want to go down for it?”
The older boy slowly shook his head. “I don’t like crowds,” he stated. “You can go if you want.” He was a little surprised when Dabide shook his head and clung to his arm. It was a little strange to have his personal space invaded so much by someone he barely knew and he put it down to the alcohol for him actually letting it happen without putting up a fight.
So they continued to sit there, only mentally joining in the countdown and then watching the fireworks being set off from the cliff top in silent awe and it wasn’t until some of the main crowd started to leave the beach that they finally spoke again.
“Happy New Year, Yagyuu-san,” Dabide murmured and finally loosened his grip on the senior’s arm.
“Happy New Year, Dabide-kun.”
