rh_drabblefest "Are you all right?" he murmured. A flash of anger ripped through her chest as she whirled.
"What do you care?" she hissed--she had only imagined the concern that appeared to vanish from his eyes underneath her gaze. His expression hardened, his shoulders squared as they continued walking.
"I don't," he muttered with distaste. "It only--it just...It doesn't look good, Kate."
Her hand lifted to cover the wound on her arm, suddenly very conscious of the warm blood on her sleeve. "I'm sure it doesn't," she snapped, ducking her head behind her hair. "Tuck can fix it back at camp."
"Wait."
Her feet stopped--she felt him wrap something around her arm, pulling it comfortably tight. His fingertips brushed her skin; in the dark, she couldn't see him clearly, but his presence was warm and strong beside her.
"There."
"Was that necessary?"
"Yes." He didn't seem open to argument on the fact, instead continuing forward into the forest.
"Why?"
"You were bleeding badly."
"It doesn't matter to you."
Now it was his turn to whirl, stop her in her tracks just inches from her. "As much as you seem determined to hate me," he whispered through the dark. She could barely see his dark eyes glitter. "I will not have you collapsing from blood loss while I am responsible for you."
"Responsible?!" she exclaimed loudly as he turned to walk away--he ignored her. "Responsible for me? No one in this world is responsible for me, Guy, and if you forget that again I'll beat you senseless!"
"You don't consider yourself responsible for others?" he asked without turning.
"What? Like who?"
"Like your brother."
Her blow knocked him to the ground, making stars erupt behind his eyes. He felt her land heavily on him, her hands around his throat.
Breathing heavily, he opened his eyes to see her above him, her face twisted with rage and grief.
"Don't you dare," she breathed. "Don't you dare."
"I did something to you," he said hoarsely, his hands reaching for hers around his throat. "Something terrible. That's why I'm responsible."
"I don't want you to be."
"I don't have a choice."
There was a silence then. A silence filled with the sounds of the nighttime forest--but for them, there was only each other.
He whispered softly: "I need to protect you."
His hands were warm on hers, even as she kept them around his neck. "Are you sorry?" she demanded. He could hear the emotion choking her voice.
He took a deep, shaking breath. "Yes."
"You're lying."
"I'm sorry."
"Sorry for what?"
"For lying."
Her hand drifted from his neck to his cheek, holding his face for a brief moment. "I'm sorry too."
Then she stood. And ran.
Guy was left lying on the forest floor, his breath stolen.
I hate this fic.
I can't write to save my life.
