So today after a talk with Morgen we realized that he is actually going to have leave time until DECEMBER of this year. Previously I thought that when he gets out of the Army September 1 of this year that he would be paid for terminal leave starting then and ending in mid October - giving him a short window of time to find a part time job and leaving us on the income of that job and my job alone until January when he will start school back up full time and be getting 1300 a month in BAH while he is in school. So I figured we were going to have some very financially slim months ahead of us.
NOW this changes everything. If he can get a job right off we'll be getting full pay from his new job, terminal leave pay (which is what he makes right now) until sometime in December, and pay from my job! That is a TON of money coming in, way more than we make right now. Worst case scenario he doesn't get a job in that fourish month span of time and we end up making what we currently do that entire time and once he goes to school and gets off terminal leave he can apply for unemployment and we'll collect that and BAH along side my pay which will basically mean we'll be making a comparable amount of money to what we make now.
If he can get that two job flow money coming in, though, we could quite possibly have twenty grand in the savings account by the end of this year and continue to add to it in the years that he's in school. By the end of next year, if we play our cards right, we could be prepared to put a very large down payment on a house and that entire time we'll have a huge back up plan fund for if anything goes wrong for us financially. It would be amazing if we could get up to 20k by the end of this year and then continue to save bit by bit until Morgen is done with school so we can purchase a home. If we save like that we could literally buy 1/4th or even half of our home outright (depending on the cost of the house) and have it paid off faster leaving ourselves to live very comfortably for the rest of our lives.
Hard work and dedication gets you places, friends. The next couple of years will require a lot of exhaustion and work for both of us (I'd like to go back to school as well) but if we stick to it and stay determined to save money I really think we can throw ourselves out way ahead of the game.
