“So, uh, what about you?”

Out of context, this was not a hard question. Verde’s fingers paused over the keyboard, and he gave the screen an intent look. He should have been doing his research, really, but, well. . . she’d been online. And she’d helped him with so many other problems before. . . .

He wasn’t surprised that they’d gotten off topic. Nor was he surprised that their conversations had taken this turn- they’d gradually been getting more and more personal and closer and closer to the realm of “dating”.

Internet dating. He couldn’t help feeling some sort of disdain for it. After all, they hadn’t had internet dating when he’d been an adult.

God. When he’d been an adult. How do you go about explaining that you’ve been cursed into the eternal form of a baby? What kind of higher intelligence thought of something like that?

Because there was no way around that they’d been chosen for this fate by a higher intelligence. God, he was avoiding the question.

Hello?

Hello?

Hello?

Hello?

Hello?

Hello?

He took another moment to try and collect himself, then started.

“Would you bel-”

No. She wouldn’t. They’d already had several discussions about this- whether an intelligent being could be out there, whether it had to be out there. How this would impact the meaning of physics, or finding knew Laws.

She wouldn’t believe him. He backspaced.

Um.

That was just to let her know that he was still there, and he buried his face in his hands, tiny elbows resting on the desk. What would Viper do? Viper was a good liar. And Reborn had skill with women as well.

He was asking himself what his fellow babies would do. He never thought that day would come- that was not a good sign. Especially since she was- what? Twenty-three? Not as young as Bianchi but far too young for a man who was stubbornly celebrating his fortieth birthday next month, despite the physiological inconsistencies. And they didn’t really talk about science any more these days anyway, so there was no point in denying it anymore- she was clearly looking for a relationship.

He sighed, lifted his head.

It’s complicated.

That was all he could say on the matter. It was time to return to work, so he said a quick “Goodbye” and logged off, slipping out of the computer chair and trotting across the lab to his cabinet of notes.

He only came up to the bottom of the handle, and that was definitely an obstacle with the ladies anyway.

How did the other guys do it?
