Cranach in my Cranium

So, for the last few days I have been working diligently on my Judgment of Paris paper, looking at "medieval" elements in this Renaissance masterpiece... actually it's in this set of 12+ masterpieces, what can I say, Cranach was incredibly prolific.

So anyway, I am trying to explain why Mercury does not look like Mercury (young, clean shaven, traveler's hat with wings) but like a Norse God (crazy armor, old man face, long white beard...) apparently this is something that everyone notices, but no one feels the need to explain, well except me obviously.  I have been trying to figure out if there was a visual tradition for Wotan/Woden/Odin... even Thor or some other god.... and have come up with diddly.  I even broke down and asked Dr. Smith, and he was very usefull is saying "have you consulted these sources?" which I have, but that means there is no magical book that I just havn't found yet.

In the middle of all this, I am fighting against people's lack of footnoting.... if you research something, FOOTNOTE IT!!!!! That way when I come along, I can figure out what the heck you are talking about....
So, anyways, now I have 6 pages written on this project, and a long powerpoint pressentation.  I have to scan a few more images, and then I can move on to my French homework.  I will be back on this over the weekend as I have to produce another 6 pages for next week....
