dressing up used to be a privilege, a special treat. I wear nothing but skirts and dresses now because the old novelty makes things better.

while folding laundry today I picked up a pillowcase and put it over my hair like a veil to amuse myself tayler and started dancing around the room with him. much to my delight, I discovered my sister was back in her room tying a turban around her head and an impromptu wedding took place between us. (we had just finished reading aladdin and the king of thieves). after my sister and I were legally wed, my pillowcase veil became a troubador's cape for tayler to charge and then a makeshift apron for him as he assumed the role of a french chef to make my dad a birthday cake. he is two, of course, and I had to do the accent and most of the speaking for him as well, but he knew his role all the same. this is a house of pretenders, yes sir, and I'm glad.
