Fine Dining
Komi - Greek/fusion, seats only 16, set menu (the only choice you have is entree), best chef for several years now. Book a month in advance. A true foodies place. Expect a two-hour dinner. My absolutely favorite restaurant
CitiZen - fusion in Mandarin Oriental. Both set menu and a la carte. Minimalist ambiance. Imho, overpriced
Plume - French. Chic and intimate ambiance (try the lounge too!). Food is hit-and-miss, service is sometimes questionable
Marcel - Belgian, excellent food and fantastic wine list, the ambiance is a bit too posh and old. But food-wise, one of my favorite places in town
Upscale Dining (the first three are my favorite places in town)
Le Diplomate - restaurant "du jour". French brasserie, very stylish, good food, fashionable crowd, a very large patio. One minus - incredibly loud. Recommend to book 10 days in advance
Blue Duck Tavern. American Fusion. Stylish. Good for both dinner and lunch. In summer, try the patio. Again, reservations should be made way in advance
Rasika (now two locations: PenQuarter and WestEnd - I prefer this one) - excellent Indian fusion (the same owners as Bombay Club, but I like the atmosphere better)
Tosca - wonderful Italian restaurant, excellent pasta. The ambiance is a bit business-like
Palena Restaurant. Mediterranean. Set menu
Obelisk - Italian. Seats only 36, set menu. Great little place! Book at least a week in advance
Fiola - creative Italian cooking, by the former chef of Maestro, Fabio Trabocchi. Imho, the best things on the menu are appetizers. Pasta sauces are too heavy. Entrees are not very interesting
Café Milano - best people watching for lunch
Makoto - authentic Japanese omasaka meal
The Source. Asian Fusion by Wolfgang Puck. Nice lounge downstairs. For dinner only
The Oval Room. Very nice American. Stylish. Better for lunch
Restaurant in the Hay Adams hotel. Very good for lunch (and good for politicos watching). They also have a very styish bar underground "Off the Record", the watering hole for WH staff and TV correspondents
Casual Dining (not in any order :-)
Izakaya Seki - one of the best Japanese in town. Try to get a seat at the bar. No reservations
Unum - American. Small, but well design menu which accommodates all preferences. All entrees come in small (European) or large (American) sizes. The place is a narrow "shoebox" design,no windows, but the food is very good!
B-Too. Belgian. Some of the best mussels in town. Other things are also excellent. Ambiance is very cheap-looking. Ask for a table of the main floor
Table - Combination of French and Belgian for a celebrity chef. In summer, ask for a table on the roof-top terrace
Doi Moi - new Vietnamese/Thai restaurant. Excellent food, young and fun crowd. No reservations, so try to come around 6.45
Kapnos - new Greek restaurant from the owner of Prrof. Tapas style. Good food, but a bit overpriced. Incredibly loud
Proof - American fusion. Exceptional wine list. Not really recommended for vegetarians as the best dishes are meat-type and charcuterie
Boqeria - Spanish tapas. The Spanish chef used to work at Il Buli and at Alain Ducasse in Paris
Brasserie Beck - Belgian bistro, 55 beers list. Patio in summer
Cafe Palena - sister restaurant/the same building as Palena restaurant, but bistro fair. Fabulous!
Central - one of my favorite bistros. Combination of French/Belgian/American. The same owner/chef as Citronelle
Kafe Leopold - best outdoor seating, especially for lunch. Austrian cuisine. Food is so-so. Deserts are very good
BlackSalt - seafood in Palisades. Great oyster offering! Also, have a fish market
Al Tiramisu. Home-style Italian cooking. Very cosy atmosphere. Book at least 2 days in advance
Kotobuki. Japanese/sushi. This place looks like a dive, but has the freshest fish in town. The same owners as an expensive restaurant Makoto, down below
WestEnd - yet another good bistro, in Ritz Carlton on 22 and M
Oyamel - Mexican. Fantastic margaritas, authentic Mexican
Zaytinia - Middle Eastern mezzas, very casual, usually very crowded
Le Zinc. Stylish bistro across from 2Amys. Appetizers are much better then entrees. Fashionable crowd
Bistro Bis - French fusion. Good for politicos watching
Jaleo - Spanish tapas, very casual
Ris. American fusion. Stays open until mid-night
Bistro du Coin. French bistro in DuPont Circle
Murayo. Greek. Excellent fish baked in salt. Very casual ambiance. DuPont Circle
Bistro de la Pic. Also a small bistro and wine bar on the second floor
La Chaumiere. Used to be my favorite French-country. Rather old clientele
Snacks/Coffee/Pizza
2Ammys - by far the best Neapolitan pizza in town (+ excellent donuts on Sunday)
Puro Cafe - nice outside seating , during summer - jazz in the evenings
Patisserie Poupon - croissants, sandwiches, coffee. By far, the best desserts in town!
Dolcezza - best gelato in town!!! I go there once a week. Now three locations: Wisconsin Ave, Bethesda and Dupont Circle
Georgetown Cupcakes. Supposedly, the best cupcakes in town
Prague Cafe - good for coffee and deserts
