My brain is spinning its tires, caught between organic chem (my usual nemesis) and the things I'd rather be pondering. I picked up Chelsey's copy of The Irresistable Revolution (which I'd accidentaly appropriated a week ago) this morning and I haven't been able to focus on the Diels-Alder Reaction... or much of anything... since ( Read more... )

Hello lady. I love how this entry has left me both thinking about the philisophical and also the mental image of you and the human and/or monstrous embodiment of organic chem in a fight to the death. Good luck.

I think that being part of commune in Edmonton would be quite difficult. Our family actually has property on a near self-sustaining commune on the west coast. There is a hot springs and the whole island runs on wind and solar power; there are "take a cookie leave a quarter" jars everywhere and everyone dangles their feet out of the windows of their cars.

Commune-ing would be very different here. All the same, Tim and I were scheming today and it honestly seems possible. I'm not sure we're going for self-sustaining though, is the thing, and perhaps commune is the wrong word. But I suppose I envision something that is ... community-sustaining, if not self-sustaining, located in the innercity. A commune rooted in the neighbourhood around them, offering all they have and accepting what is given in return.

We might have to settle for Tim's grease-powered car and energy-saving devices as far as the environment goes. I do like the cookie jar idea though.

I think it would be cool.

Sorta diff idea: I also wish that students could start working with professionals from the start ... I wish I had a boss/mentor not a couple different proffs. School sometimes seems like a waste of time, 'cause you learn more by hand anyway. I wish all of edmonton could really be a big community that actually cares about each other and does something about it. And I kinda wish that there could be other more tangible (then there is now) communities in different proffesions with mentors and students and university getting payed for by your future employer, or something of that sort. I'm not making much sense right now, I'm sorry about that.

Different idea, but still valuable. Communities are cool, however they come about. Mentors are immensely valuable though, I think--- maybe find a local artist you admire and gather up the courage to ask some questions? Or a prof you particularly enjoy?

^.^ ... I kinda wouldn't be one to ask an artist to mentor me ... it would have to be them asking me to help them in their studio ... but I highly doubt that will happen. Now a days artist are more solitary creatures.
