Andrew's mom gave Thomas and me a ride home after church today. With Kristopher in the car too, it somehow only took about 5 minutes or so for a debate on evolution to break out.

It was ... really good, though. I was definitely the least fundamentalist person in the car, and although Thomas and I totally disagreed with each other, I was at least comforted to know that I'm still capable of having a debate without getting all emotional. Mrs. Dreger is a rather amazing person though. After we dropped Thomas off, she and I ended up digressing to half-a-dozen other topics with varying levels of agreement, and I suppose Kristopher must have faded out at some point. There's a mix of intelligence and wisdom, assertiveness and grace there that I don't quite fathom, and she is certainly one of those people who can make you feel at ease despite all the possible awkwardness of the situation.

"What are you thinking?" she asks during a lull. We have been sitting in my driveway for five minutes now.
"Just that I love these conversations," I say.
"You should come over for dinner sometime," says Kristopher, who has been listening to us converse in the back.

I said something noncommittal, but it occurs to me that yes, I really would like to. There is something good about that family. Not perfect by any stretch, no, but they are good people, and during times like this, sometimes that's enough to heal.

Speaking of good people reminds me that I owe Cindy yet another cookie. Or actually, let's make that a chai latte and a brownie. Je t'aime.
