Kou Kou Kyoushi 2003
She's the schoolgirl in love. He's the terminal teacher using her to offset the loneliness of his impending death. Together, a doomed co-dependent mess masquerading as romance!
This drama is sort of awe-inspiring in the new and creative ways it gets UTTERLY FUCKED UP. It's about a girl in love with her teacher, who is slowly dying from a brain tumor, who leads her to believe she's the one with the fatal illness so he'll have someone to UNDERSTAND HIS PAIN. Toss in some sex, suicide, rape, underage prostitution, middle-aged men lusting after schoolgirls (yes, more than one) and you might as well slit your wrists now. It's what the characters of this drama would do, anyway.
Hina:
Is in love with her math teacher, Koga:
Koga is a self-loathing mess of neediness and abandonment issues, which can only be conveyed to the audience through bouts of shirtlessness. (Yeah!) We can assume this is the reason he accepts 3am phone calls from jailbait:
Go ahead and commit yourself to hell now, because they are CRUSHINGLY CUTE.
He steals her lunch! She sneaks over to his apartment! He calculates impossible equations on her whim! Did I mention he's a mathematician?
A sexy mathematician.
And Hina is awesome, charming and not at all annoying. She's the sunny, pure-hearted schoolgirl who makes no bones about the fact she wants to lay Koga like carpet.
Desperate in his final months, Koga convinces Hina she's actually the one with the brain tumor, and they latch together as a sort of needy, doom-laden amoeba with lots of clingy embraces and foreboding voiceovers.
If you considered that the depths of the ethical plunge, ohhhh boy are you ready to be schooled. Let me put it this way: the dying suicidal pedo is actually the least fucked-up character. In fact, there will come a time you'll be applauding his morale, because at least he's not one of THESE puppies:
Koga's doctor, who not only enables his lie, but GIVES HINA MEDICINE SHE DOESN'T NEED, because she's using Koga as a replacement for her late husband.
Aoi Yuu, the tiny schoolgirl psychopath with an eye for emotionally vulnerable prey.
Narimiya Hiroki the host, so cold and heartless it's downright comical. Like, I was expecting a black moustache somewhere. There's one scene, I don't want to spoil it, but it was just so horrible and cruel I had to LAUGH, because what the fuck?
THE STATUTORY RAPE CLUB?? I have a theory Nojima Shinji was deliberately chipping away at our morals one episode at a time, laughing all the way to the bank. How else can you explain Hina/Koga, which is a bottom-feeding tumor of lies and despair, and still the most meltingly romantic of all?
I'll leave you with the carnival ride that is deceit, betrayal, and cancer:
GOOD TIMES.
