Tiger & Dragon
He's a debt-collecting yakuza and wannabe comedian. His best friend is the estranged son of a comedy legend who would rather be a fashion designer. Together, SCREWBALL SCREWUPS!
Do you know Kudo Kankuro? You should know Kudo Kankuro. He's one of the only chances you'll get to apply "clever" to jdramas. XD He's insane, inappropriate, and brilliant -- the kind of writer who leaves you baffled but thoroughly entertained, not because he doesn't know what he's doing, but because he's carefully maneuvering the audience until he can pull the rug from under everyone. Tiger & Dragon is full of meta upon meta sandwiched in punchlines, a great example of stories that don't always make sense until you're watching them for the second time. I can't recommend this one enough.
Tora is a hot, trashtalking, chainsmoking gangster with a tongue thing...
...who would love to be a rakugo comedian, except he's not funny. That's right. An aspiring comedian-gangster with NO SENSE OF HUMOR. When the audience heckles him he threatens to dump their bodies in a river.
Ryuji is a tiny spaz with no money and terrible taste in clothes, completely whipped by his family, his girlfriend, and his store assistant Aoi Yuu, who is maybe 90 pounds soaking wet and backhands him into walls.
HER SIZE JUST MEANS YOU DON'T SEE HER COMING.
Love that scarf, baby. Words can't bring you down.
The thing about rakugo is that it's a very old, traditional brand of comedy... until Tora happens.
Tora's traditional rakugo falls flat, so he improvises, taking the real-life insanity of his friends and weaving it into his routine. The result is a deliciously meta back-and-forth between the cast, the rakugo story, and the cast telling the rakugo story. It's stories of people telling stories of people telling stories of... you get the picture.
COSTUMES FOR EVERYONE!
Some people are more thrilled than others.
Why yes, yes that is Nagase Tomoya smacking Abe Sadao's bare ass while thugs rip off Tsukamoto Takashi's clothes and LICK HIM. Gay? In a jdrama? NEVER.
HEIGHT DIFFERENCE.
...height difference. XD
HE HAS TO CRANE HIS NECK JUST TO LOOK NAGASE IN THE EYE.
A man after my own dream.
L-look at all that sexy plot...
P-plot...
Plot all over the place...
Say it with me:
ONSEN SCENE!!!!
THANK YOU JAPAN! I'll take one for Christmas.
Kitamura Kazuki the street thug, who does us the great service of roughing up pretty boys and tying them to trees.
Are you watching? *__*
IMPORTANT NOTE: The special is actually the first episode! I imagine it was Kudo's way of saying "fuck you, I'll have twelve episodes if I want."
