Hanayome to Papa
He's the overprotective dad. She's the daughter desperate for freedom. Together, the soul of a John Mayer song injected in a jdrama!
Aiko is 20 years old, living with her father, and not allowed to have a boyfriend, a cellphone, or to be out past her 7pm curfew. Dad sees his restrictions as a sign of EVERLASTING PATERNAL LOVE!, his pet phrase being "daughters should listen to their parents until they become brides!"
One day Aiko finally snaps that she'll just get married, then! She'll go to work and find someone to marry!
The rest of the drama is an exercise in "well that sure backfired on you, didn't it, dad."
Some families are close-knit and deeply loving...
...Some families.
At 20, Aiko is tired of being pampered and coddled, and she decides marriage is the only way out of her father's household. As a feminist, I begin weeping.
Lucky for her there's a knight around every corner, and this one looks like a boybander!
Miura is sweet and smiley, always with this earnest puppy-dog face like "By gosh, I just can't help that I'm cute and eager and my hair grows just a smiiiidge overlong and falls in my eyes! Feed me! Pet my head! (By the way, I'm also great with kids!)"
Ignore the pop-star good looks, guys! He's just a normal dude, standing tall and statuesque against the wind.
CUTER THAN BABY KITTENS!
Her father, of course, gets one whiff of the relationship and responds accordingly.
It's just his way of showing he cares! Buck up, Miura-kun!
"What part of my daughter do you like?"
"All of her!" Miura says earnestly.
"........Do you know all of her?"
Well, he wanted to...
HER FATHER. THINKING ABOUT THEM KISSING. "SHE WAS JUST IN DIAPERS!" LAUGHED UNTIL I CRIED.
AND THAT'S NOT AT ALL! Plucky naive 20somethings being a hot commodity in dramaland, Aiko gets not one, but two suitors at work!
Sweet talk.
IT'S LIKE HE'S MAKING LOVE TO HER WITH WORDS.
Honestly, I was shipping the wrong OTP. Just look at the way she looks at him! And he's all nice to her and she makes him smile (but he always turns away before she can see, because my god, think of his reputation). DRAMAS HAVE CONDITIONED ME TO BELIEVE THIS IS TRUE LOVE. I FEEL CHEATED.
I guess if any couple could overcome the tried-and-true Asian cliche of a reformed jerk, it would be the unrelenting cuteness of Miura/Aiko.
CUTE!
CUUUUUUUTE!
Cute...
CUTER!
One of my favorite scenes: Aiko's dad announces to his co-workers (who are like family) that he's finally decided to give her a little breathing room. Their response? A slow clap.
All in all, a fun little family drama with some guaranteed Japanese language improvement -- by the finale you'll sure as shit know the words for "marriage" "bride" "wedding" and "please don't put my boyfriend in a headlock, dad."
