Nothing much, and everything

Work is continuing to kill me. I think if I can get through this week (my boss' last and the 2,000,000th volume celebration and one class to teach on Charles Bukowski) things will settle down a little bit. I hate when work gets stressful.

So, I've practiced retail therapy to compensate for my exhaustion, feelings of drowning, and utter lack of accomplishment... (To be fair, I did finish processing the Eisner stuff and dance videos, but to offset that, donors want to give me even more comics I have no room for).

I've been bad, but not really. I desperately needed new cookware. I've worn out what I have (and I ruined my 8qt dutch oven last winter - don't ask!). So I've spent weeks searching for just the right set...

11" enameled cast iron skillet:

3qt enameled cast iron covered chicken fryer:

5 piece enameled cast iron cook set including a lasagna pan, 3qt saute pan, grill pan, and 4qt dutch oven in blue:

And finally KitchenAid Gourmet Reserve Hard Anodized 10 Piece Set:

I have to say I'm excited and I can't wait to cook using my new pots and pans. My father is excited at the prospect of fried chicken and gravy. I'm excited about chili. My family is eagerly awaiting Thanksgiving when I can really give the pieces a workout.

I can't wait for the cast iron pieces to arrive though. I've got a cast iron skillet I make oven-fried cornbread or upside down pineapple cake in, but never use it for anything else. I dunno why. Cast iron is amazing for cooking of any kind. I guess I don't use the skillet I have for general cooking because it is older than me, and at least as old as my oldest brother. It was my mother's. It's got some years of her(hard, seriously my mother was a rough cook)cooking on it. It's sorta sacred. Which is crazy because cast iron cookware, with proper care, will last forever.  I will probably add one stainless steel fry pan to the mix as well just because I can.

I also forced myself to go see the eye doctor yesterday so I could get new contact lenses. I've only been needing to do this for a year and I kept putting it off and putting it off and putting it off until my contacts were so worn out they were uncomfortable and impossible to keep clean. I mostly did this because I knew my brand had been discontinued and I hate change when I'm very happy with something. So I found a substitute brand I can live with. I also found an eye doctor that I like, and it's a woman. My last eye doctor gave me the creeps to be alone in the exam room with him.

life, cooking
