In my humble opinion, this is some bullshit. For those of you who'd rather not click, the above is a link to an article about the debate concerning whether or not babies who are born in this country to illegal immigrants should be granted immediate status as citizens. I think one of my biggest issues with a lot of this is the way that many of the supporters keep referring to these children as 'anchor babies', and in tones that make them sound like objects, not children.
And these are the same people that get pissed off when an unborn baby is called a 'fetus' because they feel it dehumanizes the baby/fetus in question.
So it's not ok to use a medical term that accurately defines the being in question, but comparing a child to an actual object is ok? Am I the only person who sees something terribly wrong with this?
And I know, there are far more problems with this whole debate then this alone, (like the fact that many are obviously ignoring the facts about any and all other reasons that a pregnant women may have to come here, like better medical care and jobs) but just looking at the phrases that people are using to debate it can tell you alot about how they truly feel about the people to which they are referring, in my mind. We are talking about someone's child, a being who will one day be taking a very active part in shaping this world. They deserve better then to be spoken of like this, let alone treated better.
I do love the second reader's comment, especially their last line, "America is for Americans, no matter their skin color, or how recently their family came here."
