Winning Friends and Influencing People
I've been reading a lot of books recently about generally improving relations with other people, even the classic How to Win Friends and Influence People. Despite the upbeat tone of these books, the underlying theme they share seems to be that people are completely and utterly selfish and self-absorbed, and you have to cater exclusively to that idea before they will even notice you. In other words, here's how you can make more friends and get to know people better, but most people aren't really worth getting to know.
