Chicago got hit by a fairly decent sized snow storm (~5 inches at last count) at exactly the wrong time today. It started snowing heavily at 1 PM and hasn't stopped snowing since, which means that traffic was hell today because the plows didn't have time to get things cleaned up before the afternoon rush hour.
Actually, it was my first truly bad commuting experience since I've been working. My normally one hour drive took me three hours tonight--and I left work at 3 PM! Thank God I wasn't going to the northern suburbs--by 6 PM it was FOUR HOURS from downtown to O'Hare! (To give you an idea: less than 20 miles of highway driving took four fucking hours.) By comparison 27 miles in three hours is flying.
I think the worst part about snowy commuting is that after about two hours in the car I get very hostile toward the weather. I love snow and driving in it just makes me resentful of its presence, when I should be enjoying the pristine, peaceful, beautiful world it creates. I know that's somewhat fanciful and less than pragmatic view of the world, but winter's my favorite season and I'd appreciate not losing my enjoyment of it to nasty drives home.
Although, despite the gross commute, tonight was a nice night. Kevin made an excellent dinner and then we baked 100 (!!!) cookies for the cookie exchange at my work tomorrow. The house smells wonderful and gingery, which makes it seem even more like Christmas
