I'm trying to figure out which conservative donor Wash U has pissed off so much that not only are they having Chris Matthews as our commencement speaker, they are granting Phyllis Schlafly an honorary doctorate.
I'm too pissed to be coherent right now. I just have no idea how any university could even consider granting either of those people the courtesy of saying hello let alone actually honoring them at commencement. Chris Matthews' campaign coverage has been unparalleled in its sexism and seldom resembles anything remotely close to legitimate commentary. I honestly believe that man can't speak about Hillary Clinton without insulting her in (what are often very gender-specifc ways). If you don't like her politics that's fine, but don't just fling insults claiming the only reason she's a senator is because Bill Clinton screwed around on her, you fucker.
But, really, I could have tolerated Chris Matthews if it were just him. What really gets me is granting that ridiculous woman, Phyllis Schlafly, an honorary doctorate. She has spent her life working against pretty much everything achieved by feminists, well, ever. The only thing she hasn't done is attempt to revoke the Nineteenth Amendment. She has been a life-long opponent of the ERA whose attitude toward women is atrocious. She tells women that they should all return to the home to be wives and mothers, while she herself is a lawyer who spends her time traveling the country to speak at anti-women's rights movements. What's more, she denies that rape is possible in marriage and ridicules women for seeking divorces, trivializing the reasons they do so by suggesting that they only do it because their husbands forget their birthdays. Phyllis Schlafly embodies everything that I am against as a woman and a feminist. I can't believe that anyone in the administration would find it at all acceptable to reward her blatant sexism in any way. She has done nothing to improve our country or the lives of women; she merely ridicules us and tries to force us back into some crazy 1950s ideal that NEVER FUCKING EXISTED in the first place.
Ugh, I can't believe I go to school here. This is so appalling. Thank god I'll be graduating.
