*sings* I feel the earth...move...under my feet

Oct 13, 2010 12:34

People have told me for years that Oklahoma has at least one fault line and that we do, in fact, have a high amount of earthquake activity. The reason most don't notice it, they say, is because the quakes are so small that only the detectors feel them.

Not so today!

Sometime between 9:00 and 9:30 this morning, I was at the optometrist with the boys, getting their annual eye exam. We were all three waiting out in the lobby when my chair started to move! I looked over to Older Son and he asked if I was feeling that, too. I nodded and looked to Younger Son, who nodded as well. It stopped after a moment and I didn't think much else on it. Eye exams were performed, new glasses chosen, and the boys were returned to school.

Then I got home and logged onto Facebook and, lo and behold! OKLAHOMA HAD A FRIGGIN EARTHQUAKE. It hasn't been decided yet if it was 4.7 or 5.1 but it was definitely strong enough to be felt all the way from Oklahoma City to Tulsa to Dallas. (To give you an idea where in Oklahoma I am, draw a straight line from Oklahoma City to Dallas, find the center of the line; that's me. *waves*) I haven't heard yet where the epicenter was, but still. AN EARTHQUAKE! IN OKLAHOMA!

It's just wrong...on so many levels.

ETA: More info at this page. It says the epicenter was eight miles SE of Norman (near Oklahoma City).
