addicted to wuxia again
It feels so nice to be back in Jiang Hu. It's been a while since I've been sucked into that kind of drama. 天涯明月刀 or it's ewww english title 'The Magic Blade' is a Gu Long adaptation and I have to say it really has such a nice plot. The story is so awesome I can forgive all the flying monkeys and swimming pigs all over the production. The biggest has got to be Wallace Chung's hideous hairdo. Also, sometimes I wonder how much tampering the producers get to do with the drama, because it always bothers me whenever there's flying boulders. Being a xianxia addict, my brain automatically screams 'magic array' and magic arrays don't belong in wuxia, they belong in Chinese Paladin or something. Wuxia always came off to me as more rooted in reality, so the genre difference is very sensitive to moi.
All the things I love about this drama that makes me forgive some of this producer's slips, and I'm happy that there's quite a few good points! Actually, this producer I can very proudly say improved somewhat since Qin Huang Li Shi Ming (the Peter Ho one) with those outfits. Still, Wallace's hair never rubbed off completely. I would've been THAT much happier if he had changed it halfway or even 3/4 into the drama? but it's still here *cries* The acting was much better than I was expecting, because what I apparently saw in the trailer prior to watching this came off with me concluding it was going to be a clown show with tacky costumes props and over-acting. It's a breath of relief to be proved wrong and completely wrong!!! The acting is very to my taste and doesn't make me cringe. There was that one dude that I suspect is the same person as that old ghost doctor, he gives me the creeps, but other than that, I am happy with what I see and can focus on the actual story and get addicted enough to not be able to stop the vehicle. Second props, I really do enjoy the chemistry between the cast. Ye Kai x Fu Hong Xue bromistry is really so cute, and the second couple made me want to squeal like the little girl I actually am!! This is the only drama that I was completely smitten by a Baron Chen character. The Ye Kai x Ling Er is great balance for the main triangle created by Fu Hong Xue and his 2 female leads. The supporting chars. are all very charming in their own evil or not ways.
The story is typical of a Gu Long mystery, and mysteries are awesome and full of conspiracies and hidden identities and secrets and betrayals and plenty of pain for Wallace to fry around in (I didn't coin that btw, but if you did, do let me know because I love it!!) It's also a great advantage not having watched any previous adaptations of this story, so no biases and comparisons to taint my enjoyment! Except, it was probably not a good thing to have a wuxia-addict dad to spoil the biggest secret.
My rates for this drama:
Visuals - 6/10
Story - 10/10 7/10
Acting - 9/10
Enjoyment - 8/10 7/10
edit - Alright, I think I scored too highly for this drama. It got really crazy towards the end @_@
