Pondering...

I was just reminded of something that happens to me fairly often.
I'll learn a new word that I can't recall having seen or heard before, and then I suddenly see it everywhere. Was I oblivious before? So strange.

The word I was reminded of today was bling.
The first time I noticed the word was, of all places, in the movie New York Minute (yeah, with Mary Kate and Ashley, it was one of the wonderful selections forced upon us on a long bus ride, along with A Cinderella Story and Princess Diaries 2). But since then I've seen it a lot.

This same thing happens to me all the time with words in Spanish. I was just chatting with Tara about one example of a local cuss word (la concha) to which I was utterly oblivious while in Uruguay but now I see that it is indeed everywhere, including in my best uruguayan friend's mouth.

How do I miss these things? Am I a selective listener? Do I ignore words I don't understand instead of trying to figure them out? Strange. Does this happen to anyone else?
