Coloring in my Heart
Reeking of cheap cologne,
Self-indulgence,
And a bit of rum,
You stumbled into the living room
Looking for late-night sappy TV movies.
I colored in all the happy faces
With blue crayons,
All the houses pink,
The birdies black Vs,
My
Heart
Maroon.
Phony Birthday phone call,
Sprint like an Olympic runner to the phone.
You nuzzle at my insecurities,
Gently bruising young egos with
Your motherly inconsistencies.
I get back to my room,
In Door-locked anguish.
Rub my own hands for comfort
Nick at Night cradles my rest.
My
Heart
Maroon.
So proud of your production,
Big dress, big hair, cheap cologne.
Caressing every mother’s child,
Gloating about your own graduate.
Take a picture, please. Say Cheese.
Invisible drops,
Incredible stealth,
For twenty-one years,
You’ve kept your presence unknown.
My
Heart
Maroon.
