How did I fall in-love with you?

Promise You

Promise you

By Charmine C. Babayson

6 PM

I looked at my wristwatch then to at the traffic light in front of me. The light turned green and I crossed the street. Tonight’s a bit chilly, remnants of the cold winter very much evident as I walked the streets. I shifted my backpack feeling it getting heavier by the moment. It’s been a long a day and I can’t wait to finally have dinner and just relax.

I looked up at the sky and saw the full moon shining brightly with a million stars surrounding it. Across the street, a few teenagers were setting up a telescope and arguing about the angles and such.  I shook my head, although the moon and the stars are very beautiful I have much more favorite scene to watch.

“Byulie, wake up.”

“Ngh.” Byul, the one I’m trying to wake up groaned. “What do you want Yunnie?”

I chuckled. Her hair was tousled in different directions and as she rubbed her eyes I thought she was breathtakingly beautiful.

“Don’t tell me you forgot what day it is today. Come on we only have an hour left.”

Byul pouted but sat up anyway. “Good girl.” I said, giving her peck on the lips.

“Arraseo Arraseo.”

I helped Byul get some of her things ready and we walked a bit to the bus stop. After 15 minutes we arrived at a park and I blindfolded Byul.

“Yah. Is this really needed?” Byul asked tracing the edges of the blindfold.

I sighed. “Yes hon it’s needed. Now hold my hand and I’ll lead the way, okay?”

She pondered for a while and nodded. Then I held her hand and intertwined it with mine.

The park had a hill at the western part, a place I just recently found while looking for a good place to watch the sunrise since the treehouse was quite small for two adults to fit in. It was also somewhat secluded but well maintained so it was also a good place for a picnic.

I felt Byul tighten her grip and I smiled. “Don’t be scared. Trust me, okay.” I reassured her with a peck on the lips.

Byul nodded and we made our way to the hilltop. When we reached the spot, I stood behind her and as soon as the sun slowly rose, I took off the blindfold simultaneously. I heard her breath hitch and I wrapped my arms around her.

“Yunnie, this is beautiful.”

“Yes, it’s beautiful.” I said, not referring to the sunrise.

Byul turned around in my hold and wrapped her arms around my neck. “Thank you.”

“Happy Birthday Byulie-ah.”

I smiled at the memory and continued walking. Another few steps and I passed by a couple who were obviously in the middle of a fight. The girl was crying while the guy looked like he had no idea what to do or how to stop the girl from crying. As I moved pass them, I heard the guy ask, “Should we break up?”

Byul and I were at the cinema watching How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days as part of the Chick Flick Marathon she wanted to watch. I was having a good time watching the movie with an arm wrapped around Byul’s small form. However, what really bothered me was the fact that she’s been glancing at me once in a while as if waiting for a reaction.

With a sigh, I cupped her face with my other hand and turned her face towards me.

“Is there something wrong, Byulie?” I asked her softly so as not to disturb the other viewers.

Byul shook her head slowly but I didn’t believe her. The look on her face 100 % showed that something was wrong.

I caressed her cheek with my thumb, “Hey, you know you can tell me anything.”

Byul had her eyes cast down and I’m really getting worried about this thing that’s bothering her.

“Well…” Byul started. “Remember Dana? She recently broke up with her boyfriend. They were together for three years but they still broke up.”

“Byulie-ah…that’s their decision and we can’t do anything about that. I’m sure they’ll both find someone more suitable for them.”

“You’re right.” Byul nodded

I smiled, relieved. “So don’t worry so much okay?”

After a few minutes, Byul started doing the glancing thing again and it looked like there was more to it. So what if Dana and her boyfriend broke up? It doesn’t mean that we-wait…

“Byul?”

Byul slowly turned to me, unsure. “Yes?”

With an understanding smile, I asked her, “What’s really bothering you hon? Please tell me.”

Byul took a deep breath and started, “Dana and her boyfriend were not the only one broke up. There was Sungmin and his girlfriend of 4 years, Yoona and her boyfriend and of course Donghae who breaks up with a girl every wee-“

I didn’t let Byul finish her ramblings and just silenced her with a kiss. Its funny how she always worried about the same things but it just shows how much she cares. After the kiss, we parted our lips and the blush on her cheeks and her shocked appearance made her look cute.

“Yunnie…”

“Sshh. Byulie-ah, one thing that you should remember is that we are not like them. I know we’re just starting but I promise you this hon. I will always love you and nothing can take that away from me. So even if every couple out there breaks up, we’ll be together. Arraseo?”

After my little speech, Byul was looking down, biting her lips and I know she’s trying to hold back the tears. So with an amused smile, I held her chin and lifted her face and claimed her lips once again. I kissed her slow, sweet and the movie marathon was long forgotten.

Continuing my journey, I let out a heavy breath. Byul always amazed me at the way she carried herself. One moment she was confident and then insecure the next. I guess this was on the things that made me love her.

Walking some more, I could see the outline of the apartment building I was heading to. One more block to go. A slight breeze blew and I shivered. I was about to take a step forward when my foot got caught with a flyer. I picked it up and looked at the printed words 10,000 WAYS TO SAY I LOVE YOU. It was a flyer to a book and I chuckled as I read the description. Maybe I should by this book and use it on Byul. I imagined the look she’d give me if ever I tried one of the ways to say I love you and it was enough reason for me to keep the flyer and make a mental note to buy one tomorrow.

We were in the library doing some research work for our classes that day. It was the last year in college so there were more requirements to be fulfilled. Byul and I were busy typing on our own laptops when I noticed that she was doing that glancing thing again. I was getting suspicious but I decided to wait for her cue that she was ready to share what she was feeling. A few minutes later she spoke up.

“Yunnie-ah, can you buy a soda please?”

Her words registered on my mind and I stopped typing. “Byulie-ah, we’re in the library. No food and drinks allowed here. I’ll buy you one later, okay?”

“Okay.”

Five minutes later…

“Yunnie, can I look at you phone?”

I looked at Byul, confused. She was never the type to go around tinkering with other people’s cellphones. But oh well. I handed her the phone and continued typing.

Three minutes later…

“Yunnie, I know it’s Thursday today and there’s a football game tonight but can you come with me to the theater? I’m supposed to make a review on the play. Please?

I looked at Byul and smiled. “No problem.”

Byul grinned. “Thanks Yunnie.”

A minute later…

“Yunnie…”

“Hon, if you want to drive my car no problem.”

Byul looked shocked and I knew I just guessed what she had in mind. Sometimes she was just predictable and I love times like this because I could say that I truly know her compared to the other people around her.

I stopped typing and closed the laptop lid. I turned to her and took both her hands in mine. “Honey, you know I love you and I’d do any reasonable thing just to make you happy. So no more of this little tests, okay?”

Byul pouted and I couldn’t resist kissing the pout away. I pecked her lips and grinned at the blush on her cheeks. But she smiled brightly and I knew that I just made her happy.

Damn, if this was my reward for every sacrifice for her then bring it on.

I stood outside the apartment building and racked my brain for the combination of the front door. After remembering it, I punched in the code and took the stairs. I slowly ascended it, trying to calm my nervous self. The feeling was similar to our first date but tripled. Fighting Jung Yunho.

I led Byul to the terrace of the restaurant where we had our dinner. It was our first date and I was a nervous wreck. But thankfully, I didn’t cause any blunder so everything went smoothly.

Byul rested her elbows on the railings and looked at the garden below us. There was a pregnant silence and I’m not sure what to say or do. So with enough courage, I took her right hand and laced our fingers all the while looking at her face, awed at how beautiful she looked under the moonlight.

Byul looked at our joined hands and smiled. We continued watching the night scene for a while and went home ahnd in hand.

I opened the door slowly and took off my shoes by the doorway. The only light turned on was from her bedroom and it looks like she’s asleep. It was a good thing she gave me a copy of her keys or I would have stayed outside continuously knocking on her door.

I walked along the hallway and entered her bedroom slowly. Byul wasn’t on her bed and my view moved towards the open balcony door. I smiled as I saw her leaning on the railing, the wind blowing her hair as she suppressed a shiver. I shook my head and took her blanket from the bed before going out to the balcony. I stood behind her and wrapped the my arms along with the blanket around her. Byul gasped but immediately relaxed.

“Where have you been? I’ve been waiting for you.” She said, leaning her back against me.

I tightened my hold on her. “I had to pick up something. Sorry.” I said, kissing her temple.

“It’s okay. I’ll just re-heat dinner.”

“Byulie-ah.”

“Mmmm?”

I slowly turned her around, blanket still around her. “You know I love you right?”

Byul grinned and took a few seconds before she nodded.

“You know that you’re the only girl I ever loved right? Aside from my mother and sister, that is.”

“Uhuh. Why are you asking me this?”

“And you know that you’re the last girl I’ll ever love, right?”

Byul pretended to think, “Are you sure?”

“Mmmm. Oh. I think I’m wrong, you’re not the last since there are others.” I teased.

Byul pulled away a bit. “Yah! And why are there others, huh?”

I pinched her nose at her cuteness and then hugged her tight. I rested my chin on her shoulder and whispered slowly, “Because the next girl I’ll ever love in this earth will be our daughter.”

I heard Byul’s breath hitch and pulled away from the embrace letting the blanket pool on her feet. I knelt down on one knee and took the small box from my pocket. I opened it, took out the engagement ring and slipped it on her left hand.

“Marry me Byulie-ah. My best friend, my lover.”
