Summary: Zack tells Cloud a fact of life. His life, anyway.
A/N: I wrote this at five in the morning after a huge fight with my stepmother, which she accused me of wasting my life on the computer and I replied, "If it wasn't for the internet, I'd be the loneliest person alive!"
“Y’know,” Zack said, tossing the dumbapple he’d been holding from hand-to-hand, “if it wasn’t for SOLDIER, I’d be the loneliest guy in the world.”
Cloud’s eyes widened at this confession. Zack? Lonely? Those were the last two words he’d ever expect to hear in the same sentence. Well, maybe besides ‘Sephiroth’ and ‘tutu.’
“Ye-up.” Zack took a bite of his apple. “The loneliest guy ever.”
“Really?” Cloud finally asked, frowning at the corners of his mouth. “But...you...”
“Yeah, I know.” Zack laughed, knowing exactly what the blond was trying to say. Of course. “I mean, how could a handsome, friendly guy like me ever get lonely, right?”
“Er...right?”
“Right.” Zack nodded to himself and broke off half the dumbapple with his SOLDIER strength, offering it to Cloud, who took it with a little smile. “After all, they don’t make ‘em like me anymore.”
“...”
“I’m kidding.” Zack laughed at the horrified look on Cloud’s face. “I’m not that self-centered.”
“I know.”
The SOLDIER grinned and elbowed Cloud’s side. “But I meant it before, when I said I’d be lonely without SOLDIER.”
“Well, uh...” Cloud twirled his dumbapple half in his hand over and over. “Why?”
Zack smiled warmly. “There aren’t many kids in Gongaga. People mostly go there to retire. There were only three other kids near me when I was growing up, and the closest one to me age-wise was four years older than me - which is like, different generations when you’re a kid.” He gave a crooked grin.
“Ah,” Cloud replied in understanding, though he didn’t really. There had been plenty of kids his age in Nibelheim when he was growing up. They just all hated him.
“And none of them wanted anything to do with me since I was such a runt,” Zack continued cheekily. “I was a lonely, friendless little guy.”
That Cloud could relate to.
“So when I was able to, I joined the Shinra army, just like you.” The SOLDIER grinned and ruffled Cloud’s hair. “That was a little lonely, too. They don’t really give you time for making friends, do they?”
“Not really.” Not that Cloud had actually been trying too hard at that.
“Exactly. So I made SOLDIER,” - he made this sound like the simplest thing in the world - “and voila!”
Cloud blinked. “Voila?”
“Yup.” Zack grinned some more. “In SOLDIER, you’re usually sent on missions with the same people, ‘stead of getting switched around like you guys,” he explained, referring to the infantrymen. “Plus, I got to make friends everywhere I went! Though, uh, it’d probably help if I kept in contact...”
“So...you joined SOLDIER and you weren’t lonely anymore?” Cloud asked, trying to find some semblance of logic in this story.
“Well, yeah.” Zack nodded. “’Cause I met you.”
Cloud did a double take. “What?”
Zack chuckled and ruffled the blond’s hair. “Hey, I dunno. I can just tell you’re the kind of guy who hangs on to friends for life. And we’re friends, right?” Cloud gave a dumbfounded nod and Zack continued, “So now I know I won’t be lonely anymore, since we’ll always be friends.” Another smile. “And I wouldn’t have met you if I wasn’t in SOLDIER. Therefore...” He finally finished off his dumbapple. “If it wasn’t for SOLDIER, I’d be the loneliest guy in the world.”
Cloud finally took a bite of his own dumbapple, giving Zack a little smile around the fruit.
“Yeah,” he said quietly after chewing it thoughtfully. “Me too.”
