Yoshiya Kiryu, preferring to be called Joshua as that's what Mother and Father call him, is Neku's second partner in the Reaper's Game. Due to him entering the game alive from the RG and the Reaper's Game only being for "dead" humans in the UG, he is an illegal player. Even though he's only 15 years old, he's quite smart for his age and has a more refined taste than most humans. Unfortunately, he's very arrogant and keeps many things to himself, causing him to be untrustworthy.

Before the Neku entered the Reaper's Game, Joshua (being the Composer, ruler of the UG) was planning to end Shibuya, stating that the people there are too dull and clouded to see the many possibilities. The Conductor at that time, Megumi Kitaniji, objected to his idea saying that he could remake Shibuya into a better place. With this their game began. If Megumi can save Shibuya, then Shibuya will stay, but if he can't, Shibuya and himself will be erased. Since the Composer has much more power than the Conductor, Joshua handicapped himself to make the game fair. He chose Neku to represent him and gave Megumi one month to make Shibuya better.

When Neku's second week starts, he forcefully forms a pact with Neku, saying that he's been watching him. Due to their forced pact, and the fact that Neku could scan him, their partnership didn't begin on a very good start. While the week continued, though, it just seemed to get worse, especially when Neku finds out that his pact is with an illegal player. The fact that Joshua cared more about jacking Shibuya than winning the game didn't help much either. This all changes in the final day of their week, though. During their battle with the Sho Minamimoto, the Game Master of that week, Neku found himself midst of his final attack, unable to get out of the way. With this, Joshua decided to take the bullet for him, not wanting to lose his game with Megumi and also knowing that he'll be able to transport himself to a parallel universe instead of getting erased.
