Been far too long LJ! Figure my return should be on a not so depressing and unfortunate or raging topic. So.... I've chosen something completely random nostalgic!
Here is a comparative study of my own:
It is based off this study roaming around Tumblr I StumbleUpon.... yea.. I did that on purpose, although I don't use the latter. But judging by my

That did feel good. Gosh, seems like ages ago I sat down and threw this sucker together. My bad it wasn't very graceful or pretty.
But yea, I basically copied the wording from the prior one since the idea wasn't mines and all... so perversion as far as I can tell from the other study is a mixture of adult concepts. Looking at the link to the other study featuring American TV series it seems not only smut and porn, but also violence and heavy language is a large factor. Which of course makes logical sense considering that is another way for things to be M rated.
Here I didn't want the post to get too long winded so I didn't get much into that... because I would venture to say series like Naruto and Inuyasha rank high is a rather "duh" considering the content and main focus of the series. Hell, time period inspiration goes a long way even there. But on that note, I found Gundam Seed (Destiny) ranking so low to be more shocking.
However, as you mention, there is no way of accounting for "human error" if you will. Things will not be ranked and rated consistently from individual to individual. Hell, there is even the error of writers not consistently posting ratings based on content.
And this AO3 you speak of... enlighten me? ^__^
PS
Missed you babe! I will have to indulge you one day and do a post I was considering on what I think of Quinn Fabray and how I felt a strange connection to her... but I doubt I'll manage to pull that mess out of my ass. I was feeling very moved somewhere in those dark hours of the small break we had just a few weeks ago.... and like most things of that nature, if I don't strike while the irons hot... :/

Ahhhh, gotcha, gotcha--so it was focusing on adult concepts et al (well as et al as it could haha), and yes, no accounting for variation of rating when individualized vs. imposed by site/community and those who choose not to archive ratings, etc. I wonder how much the size of the fanbase of a series impacts it since the more people you have, the more possible people you have to generate content/the more likely you have fans who will want adult expression. Those ranking toward the top are all mega series, so likely quite a bit.
I'm not too familiar with Gundam Seed, but I would be shocked to see that low--maybe people are just letting the doujinshi take care of it? XD I'm kind of surprised Prince of Tennis is so low, but I also think when certain series were in their heyday affects these things as well. If you were to gauge something like GW's popularity using a relatively new site like Tumblr, it would give a completely false sense of its popularity because it's an older series. In its day, actual fan websites with forums were some of the biggest purveyors of information/fan content, so they have smaller presences on the go-to sites that didn't exist back then.
Very interesting project!
Miss you too, and I hope all is well with you! <3
