On Saturday, March 5th, officers with the Metro Toronto Police stormed
into Annual International Women's Day Fair, and arrested Wendy Maxwell
while she was selling cookies. 51 Division Police carried out the arrest
on a federal immigration warrant and transferred her to the custody of the
Canadian Borders Services Agency. Wendy currently sits in Vanier Women's
Detention Centre where she awaits deportation.

Born in Costa Rica, Wendy is a woman of Jamaican descent, who fled to
Canada to escape the gender persecution she faced as a black queer
activist in 1997. Denied her refugee claim and subsequent legal
applications, Wendy was slated for deportation in early 2004. In order to
protect her life, Wendy was forced to make the difficult decision to
remain in Canada without status - she has been separated from her two
children for nearly 10 years.

Despite daily fear of detention and deportation, Wendy continued to be a
vital and leading member in black, queer and Latin American communities
across the city. As an artist, community activist, radio broadcaster and
friend, Wendy is highly loved and respected.

In order ensure that Wendy is released from detention and returned to her
community, the Wendy Maxwell Support Committee is requesting immediate
financial support. The sum of $10,000 is essential to cover necessary
legal expenses. We need to respond quickly in order to win her release
before she is deported and financial support is critical in order for this
to happen.

Please consider making a donation right away. If you can contribute,
cheques can be written to No One Is Illegal with Wendy Maxwell Support
Committee written in the memo.
