I can't stand waiting for more chapters of vol. 7 to come out, so here's my take on what I think will happen next. It starts right after Volume 7 Chapter 3. None of these characters belong to me in any way and are property of Takenaga Hinako and Gush Comics.
Title: When Love is Needed
Pairing: Morinaga and Sempai (mostly)
Rating: R
Morinaga Tetsuhiro held his phone lightly in his hand, even though he knew Sempai would notice if he continued to stand so listlessly. The name of the person who sent the text was Masaki Junya, the person Sempai had only just told him never to see again. And yet this was the same person he had loved so much at one time. The text said that he wanted to meet again. Could he really say no?
"Morinaga," Sempai said sharply.
He whirled around, torn from his wondering. "Sorry, yes?"
"I asked why you're looking at your phone," he repeated, scowling.
Morinaga blinked. What should he say? He gave a hesitant smile. "Sorry, just a friend inviting me out." Immediately the guilt of his lie started to gnaw at him. But what else could he do?
Sempai shrugged and turned back to his mircoscope. "Go ahead, then. I'll finish up here soon."
Morinaga chuckled lightly. "It's fine, I don't have to go."
"Why not? All you ever do recently is hang around me. Go play with some other friends once in a while."
Morinaga was a little hurt by this, but he said nothing. He was right after all, but that wasn't the issue. What he was doing was planning to lie to Sempai and see Masaki again. But after a moment, he breathed a heavy sigh. In the end, Masaki was someone very important to him. He couldn't just say no.
"I guess I will then," Morinaga said, smiling hesitantly.
Sempai's eyes flicked briefly in his direction, but immediately returned to his microscope. "Mm," he replied. "Have fun."
Waiting for Masaki out in front of a cafe near the station, Morinaga blew into his hands to stem back the cold. Then he appeared out of the crowd: his old love. Masaki looked almost the same as he had then; the same eyes and the same expression, only his height and hair had changed. Masaki smiled when he saw Morinaga, a sad and beautiful smile. Morinaga returned it.
They chatted a little as they sat down, and it occurred to Morinaga that he hadn't asked about his brother. He wondered if Masaki had seen him, but he didn't want to ask.
"So tell me about this Sempai of yours. He must have some good qualities that aren't obvious from looking at him," Masaki said, with a gently teasing smile.
"Oh, he's not that bad," Morinaga said, chuckling. "But what did you want to talk about?"
Masaki's smile faded a little. He paused for a long time, and Morinaga began to worry that something was wrong. "About that," Masaki said, looking down at the coffee between his hands. "I think...I need some help."
And suddenly, Morinaga noticed the pained expression on Masaki's face. He looked like he was about to cry. "Masaki-san?" Morinaga said, softly, touching his hand.
Tatsumi Souichi got off the train at the station nearest he and Morinaga's apartment and breathed out a steamy breath into the winter air. His research was going well for once, his family had finally gone to their respective homes, and Morinaga was out for the night. Tonight should be peaceful, but he couldn't help feeling a little lonely. He decided to pick up some beer before heading home, and almost passed by a cafe near there when something caught his eye. It was Morinaga.
He could tell it was him even though he could only see him from the back. Another person was with him at the table, but he couldn't see who. He thought briefly about going in to say hello, but then snorted with disgust at the idea. He started to continue down the street when Morinaga suddenly leaned forward, revealed the face of the person with him. Tatsumi's eyes widened.
Masaki. That bastard.
Rather, that bastard Morinaga! He had gone to see Masaki, even when Tatsumi told him expressly not to! What what he thinking?
Tatsumi promptly stormed into the cafe without thinking, and when he did, he could hardly believe his eyes. Now that he could see them properly, he realized that Masaki was crying, and Morinaga was holding him. Holding him?! His mind went blank.
In moments, he was at their table. Masaki noticed him first and watched him with a blank expression for a milisecond. Then Tatsumi grabbed his collar and yanked the slender man from his seat. He dragged him away, ignoring Morinaga's cries, and slammed him against the corridor that led to the bathroom.
"I'm sure I told you what I would do to you if I ever saw you again," Tastumi growled, out of Morinaga's hearing.
"Sempai!" Morinaga cried, running up to them. "What are you doing? Please let him go!"
Masaki gasped for breath, only struggling slightly against Tatsumi's grip. Tatsumi glared at him. "You were the one who turned this guy into a homo, right? Then you broke him and left him for dead, didn't you? Are you proud of that?"
The man said nothing, his face still stained with tears. He no longer struggled, and despair seemed to come over his face.
"What are you trying to do now, make things right? You think he'll take you back or something?"
"Sempai, stop!" Morinaga pleaded.
Tatsumi shook the man for good measure. He glared at him him and waited for a response.
"Yes," Masaki said, with a numb look in his eyes.
Tatsumi's grip loosened. "What?" he said.
"That's why I came here. I want to be with Tetsuhiro."
"Masaki-san?" Morinaga murmured, stunned.
Tatsumi shook with rage. "You bastard," he muttered through gritted teeth.
"I know I did something unforgivable to Tetsuhiro," he said, glancing at Morinaga as he spoke. "And that as a result of that...Tetsuhiro has lost touch with his family, and I can't say how sorry I am. Back then...I was very confused. I thought I liked my good friend Kunihiro, but while hanging out with him I started to know his little brother. In the beginning, it's true that I only thought of Kunihiro. But Tetsuhiro never asked anything of me. He only thought of me. He never blamed me for anything. And what I came here to say was..."
Masaki looked pleadingly at Morinaga. "I saw Kunihiro again. And all I could think of was how much he hurt me, and how I hated him for it. Then he mentioned you. And my heart filled with kindness, just thinking of you. When I saw you again I knew I was wrong to ever break it off with you. I can't change the past, but I can love you now, Tetsuhiro. I can love you more than anyone." His gaze turned back to Tatsumi, whose grip on the man's neck had fallen away.
"Tetsuhiro loves you, so I really shouldn't say this. But I really hate people like you."
"M-Masaki-san!" Morinaga murmured, hesitantly.
Tatsumi stared in disbelief as Masaki continued, "You're no different from Kunihiro. You have no love in you. You think what you're doing to Morinaga now is any better than what I or Kunihiro did to him then?"
"What?" Tatsumi muttered, stepping away from the man instinctively.
Masaki continued on the offensive. "Leading him on like this, how long do you intend to keep hurting him?"
Suddenly, Tatsumi regained his voice. "Don't compare me to you!! You homo bastard!"
"Tetsuhiro," Masaki continued, turning back to him. "I can love you like you deserve. We can make up for all the time that was lost, but you have to let go of this poor man here."
Morinaga met Tatsumi's gaze, hesitantly. He looked lost.
"You don't have to answer now. Please think about it. I'll call you again." After saying this, Masaki touched Morinaga's face gently in parting, and then left.
Tatsumi couldn't move. He wasn't sure what this feeling was, but he felt awful. His chest was aching, and he gripped it as he regained his breath. Across from him, Morinaga stood silently, his hand touching the place where Masaki's had just been. Tatsumi's chest tightened.
"That idiot..." Tatsumi snarled. Then he turned to Morinaga. "You saw him again! Why? I told you never to see him again!!"
Morinaga regained some of his composure and put his head in his hand for a moment. "Sempai, no matter how you look at it, he's a good friend and someone very precious to me. I can't just say I'll never see him again."
"What's wrong with you?! Do you remember what he did to you?! And now he's still trying to hurt you, I'm sure of it. People like that have no morals."
Morinaga was silent for a moment. Then he raised his head. "People like what?"
"Can't you see, he doesn't care about you! He's just trying to take advantage of you!"
"Sempai, please don't say that."
Tatsumi stopped for a moment. He suddenly realized that Morinaga had been deep in thought this whole time. Was he...thinking about what Masaki said? Did he want things to go back to the way they were with him?
"Say something," Tatsumi said, quietly.
Morinaga paused for a moment, and then he sighed, heavily. "I...Sempai!"
Morinaga stared at him. Tatsumi wondered why for a moment, and then he realized a tear was falling down his cheek. There was nothing he could do. About anything. Apparently realizing that took a tole on him, even if he didn't know why.
Morinaga touched his cheek, gently. "Sempai...please don't cry. I'm not going to get back together with him."
Tatsumi glanced up at him in surprise. Then he turned away, blushing heavily. "I don't care what you do," Tatsumi muttered, though he didn't resist as Morinaga wiped away his tears.
"It's true Masaki is important to me, but...what he said was wrong. It may be painful sometimes, but I bear with it so I can be with you. Because you're the only one I love." Tatsumi glanced up at him, hesitantly. "I know there's no other way, so I endure it. If I didn't love you, I couldn't do that, right? Please don't cry."
Tatsumi shook his head, angry that Morinaga didn't understand. "No. No, I've had enough."
He felt Morinaga's hands fall away from his face in shock. "Enough?" he murmured.
"You drive me insane!" Tatsumi cried, finally voicing the things he'd been feeling for a long time. "All you do is fly in and make my life crazy! Why did it have to be me, huh? Why can't you find a nice girl and leave me alone? All I wanted to do was have a normal sempai-kohai relationship, but that just wasn't good enough for you! And you...you're never happy!"
"Sempai..." Morinaga murmured.
Tatsumi felt more tears falling down his cheeks as he spoke, but there was nothing he could do. "No matter what I do, you can't be happy! You keep driving me to my limit and making me go over it. And even then, even when I do everything I can, you're still not satisfied!!! Why did you do this to me? Why me?" Tatsumi covered his face with his hands and sank down to the floor, leaving Morinaga standing helplessly over him.
They stayed like this for a long time. Around them, confused customers and staff at the cafe tried to ignore the raised voices and get on with their evenings. Tatsumi eventually breathed out a sigh and lifted his head, most of his tears now dried. He stared listlessly toward the doorway, not wanting to move for a moment. Eventually he looked at Morinaga.
To his alarm, Morinaga had a look of terrible pain on his face, and his eyes were closed. His fists were clenched tight at his sides and he may have had a tear on his cheek as well, it was hard to tell.
"I..." Morinaga murmured. "I understand. I'm sorry, really...I'm sorry for everything." Tatsumi looked away, refusing to feel guilty. Then Morinaga extended a hand and helped him up. "Let's go home. We can talk more tomorrow."
Hesitantly, Tatsumi nodded. He didn't really want to talk any more, he felt he had voiced his annoyances and as long as Morinaga wasn't going to see Masaki again, he was satisfied. He didn't know, however, what a big effect his words would have on Morinaga.
