Awkward Silence
Henry Lau was understandably nervous. Even though his family and friends back in Toronto had done nothing but encourage him on this endeavor, he was met with the enraged fans of ELF. He knew there would be some people who wouldn’t like him joining Super Junior but he never knew the extent of it.
Thankfully, the Super Junior members were more than welcoming towards him. They offered to take him out for lunch constantly and hung out with them frequently. However, he remembered when he met Kim Ryeowook though. The older man seemed quiet, almost shy, but once they introduced each other, it was hard for Henry to bond with him. Ryeowook was just so quiet towards him - Henry wasn’t used to that. He was always used to being around people who were loud and obnoxious. He was used to being around people who let him know off the bat if they had liked him or not.
It wasn’t as though Henry never encountered introverted people before, of course. He was friends with more inclusive people but he never actually had to work with them in a band before. Henry was just used to the more outspoken musicians.
One day, Henry, Ryeowook, and a few other members of Super Junior had to meet one of the managers for a private meeting when Lee Donghae, the real oddball in the group, had asked to stop to get some food. Eventually, he managed to convince the driver to and the driver did stop. Only Henry, Ryeowook, and a couple other members remained (Henry thought it was maybe Siwon and Hangeng), but it was quiet.
Awkwardly quiet. Hangeng slept while Siwon read something. Ryeowook seemed to enjoy the peace that finally settled in the bus and looked out the window. Henry bit his lip. He wanted to get to know his band mates better. So he got up and sat next to Ryeowook. The other didn’t seem to flinch but he did shift his attention from the window to Henry.
Henry felt really awkward so he gave out a small laugh and extended his hand. “I don’t think we properly met,” he said, as he struggled in Korean. He wasn’t used to speaking it quite yet but thankfully the other band members gave him some tips and offered to help if he had any questions. “I’m Henry Lau!” he gave him a small smile. The other smiled back, he still didn’t say anything, and reached out his own hand to shake Henry’s.
Honestly, Henry was a bit irritated with how quiet this guy was.
“I’m Kim Ryeowook. Nice to meet you!” Ryeowook finally said. His light voice slightly surprised Henry. They started to talk about each other and their interests. It turned out that Ryeowook wasn’t shy but he’s just so used to being quiet - Henry felt bad that he assumed these things about him. Eventually, Ryeowook seemed to warm up to Henry.
Even when the rest of the members came back from their small trip, the two continued to talk until they reached their destinations.
