The Plan
After Shige shook off the shivers, he sat down across from Koyama, his heart starting to beat quicker once again. This time, he ignored it and went straight in. He wasn’t sure why this time, out of all times, but he knew he didn’t want to be on bad terms with his friend.
“Koyama,” he started his voice a little raw from his shouting. Shige hoped his neighbors wouldn’t bother him. “Look. I’m sorry about earlier. I’m sorry about ignoring you and Nishikido.”
“You were ignoring me?” Koyama said suddenly. He didn’t seem to care that Shige was actively ignoring him until that statement. Shige wanted to kick himself. “Why? What did I do?”
“N-nothing! I just wanted to think about my situation for a few days before I could take that man in.”
Koyama gave him a confused look but it shifted back to his worried expression.
“You should really visit that man, Shige. You told the paramedics yourself. You told Nishikido - he didn’t have anyone. Those people don’t know where he is, those people don’t even know if he’s alive! You should go and at least give him his picture back. I’m sure that’ll help you give you conversation!”
Shige avoided his gaze. Again, he knew he was right. He let out another sigh.
“I know. But I don’t know how to approach him. What if he doesn’t remember me?”
Koyama then gave him a soft smile.
“I don’t think anyone could forget you, Shigeaki Kato! Remember? You’re the angelic lawyer! I’m sure he’s heard of you. And I’m sure he’d recognize you.”
Shige looked at him again and thought about it further.
What’s the worse that can happen?
“Look, I’ll even do this as a favor from one friend to another - I’ll go on those days when you’re stuck at the office. At least Yamashita wouldn’t be completely alone!”
Shige couldn’t help but smile. Koyama’s optimism was endearing even though this man was older than him.
Koyama closed the open law book and placed it back on the bookshelf where he found it. Shige kept quiet as he watched him but Shige opened his mouth to speak once more.
“So, when do you want to start this plan of yours?”
Koyama briskly turned and pointed at Shige.
“Oh, no. You’re not going to trick me into going. You are going to break the ice, mister.”
Shige gave him a confused look. “Don’t you have the picture, Koyama?”
Koyama patted himself all over the place even on places where he didn’t have pockets.
”Nope, I don’t think I have it on me.” He said finally and as he took his seat.
“But I don’t have it either.”
Shige’s eyes widened. “But I thought you had it at the hospital?”
Koyama shook his head. “No,” he trailed off as he tried to remember that night at the emergency waiting room. “Wait, the last person to have the picture was you!”
It was Shige’s turn to shake his head. “That can’t be right, I remember you grabbed it from me?” He too trailed off as he suddenly thought.
Oh no! I lost Tomohisa’s picture at the hospital!
