Strangers in the Church

Koki Tanaka should’ve known better than to let Jin Akanishi guide the two around Los Angeles. Koki wanted to venture out of the Little Tokyo Hotel for whatever reasons that he’d long forgotten but now they ended up some place where the buildings look virtually ruined and gates surrounded every home.
He was too angry with Jin to really make a comment. Jin’s English was only passable to ask where the bus was and how he hated their asses, which admittedly got old really fast.
“How could you forget six months of lessons?” Koki asked angrily. “And now we’re lost and, haha,” he said as he brought out his cell phone, “our cell phones are dead! How are we going to find them?”
Jin looked guilty and Koki felt a bit guilty himself for ranting. “I’m sorry.” He rubbed his forehead with his hand. He tried to think of other ways to contact the fellow band members. Jin fell silent as he too thought of way out of the situation then a thought struck him.
“Hey! Koki!” Koki turned to Jin. “What if we find someone who speaks Japanese?”
Koki sighed. “Well, that would be a great idea if we were surrounded by Japanese people but,” he pointed to a random Mexican couple who walked past by them (they also didn’t need to stare at the two), “we’re not.”
Jin shrugged. “Maybe we’ll get lucky. I heard Americans really like anime.”
Koki sighed once more. “What are the chances that we’ll run into someone who is not only fluent, but they’ll also have a working Japanese cell phone?”
The other glared. “I don’t see you coming up with any other ideas.” Koki groaned out in defeat.
“Fine.” They picked themselves and continued to walk in the same direction they’ve been walking for a couple of hours or so, but as they walked further and further, the buildings looked worse. Koki was pretty sure he could hear shots, a police siren, and a fire truck, and someone yelling out in English to shut up. Of course, Koki was tough - that was his image in the band.
Eventually a man walked to the two and started to talk to Koki in Spanish. Koki responded the only way he knew how - by grabbing Jin’s hand and walking faster. He was pretty sure he offended the man and, judging the constant shooting noises, they had better get out of there quick.
Soon the hurried men saw a bunch of people gathering in front of a church and they seemed to be filling in one lone limo. Koki wondered if that stereotype was true idly before someone pushed him and Jin in the limo.
Feeling out of place was the understatement of the year for Koki and Jin. People had nice clothes on, tuxedos and big dresses. They all seemed to be having a great time even though they picked up two strangers. Koki and Jin glanced at each other and both decided to keep quiet as they journeyed. Though since Koki was close to the window he glanced out every once in a while.
He didn’t know what streets they turned on but everything started to look a little bit more and more familiar. Koki got Jin to look out the window with him and pointed out where it was familiar. They purposely kept their voices low so the people wouldn’t catch them. They even planned once they get to a certain spot, they would try to ask to get off.
However, that plan went to hell as soon as the limo made a different turn and everything became unfamiliar once again.
Jin and Koki looked at each other nervously as they continued their way to the mystery destination.
Soon the limo made its stop and everyone got out. Jin and Koki merely followed because they honestly didn’t have anyone else to turn to.
Everyone seemed really excited and one girl gave Jin a wink. Jin gave her a wink back and Koki couldn’t help but roll his eyes. Eventually someone else came up to the two and talked to them.
“Hi! Who are you here for?” she asked in English. She translated it in Spanish in case she had thought they didn’t understand her English.
Jin pushed Koki aside and opened his mouth to speak. “Excuse me,” he said, “we’re here to see your leader.” Koki placed his hand over his face and slowly brought it down. The lady looked genuinely confused and laughed nervously. “I mean,” he tried to continue. “We’re looking for our way to,” Jin paused as he tried to get the words to his lips. “Little Tokyo…H-hotel. Little Tokyo Hotel. Do you know the way?”
The lady nodded and excused herself to find her husband. Koki turned to Jin who looked smug. He wanted to punch him but all that came out was a curse word that got everyone’s attention, whether they understood him or not.
“Koki~! Don’t be mad at me!” Jin said in Japanese. He braced himself in case Koki was going to punch him square in the jaw.
“Why did you hide it, Akanishi? Huh? We could’ve gotten back a long time ago!” Koki said, clearly angry with his coworker. “Did you like getting lost? Was this something you frequently did when you were here before?”
Jin managed to pipe out a small ‘yes’ before Koki stormed off outside. Everyone’s eyes were on Jin who merely laughed at himself and tried to walk out of the area nonchalantly as well.
He followed Koki’s path as best he could to find him smoking by some garbage cans and some other guys. They seemed to ignore the two and another guy was talking in Spanish to someone on his phone.
“Hey Koki?” The other ignored him. Jin felt bad, really bad. “I’m sorry about ‘forgetting’ English. I-I just wanted to hang out with you!” Koki continued to ignore him and Jin merely sighed.
The woman from earlier came by and said that her husband was going to take the two to the Little Tokyo Hotel. Jin and Koki graciously thanked her (well, to the best of Koki’s abilities) and left the place.
The ride was awkward because the man who drove them was far too interested in Jin’s personal life and Koki refused to talk to him. Or at least it seemed that way. Jin glanced at Koki every once in a while and noticed that Koki wanted to say something but really couldn’t find the words to say. Even though Jin knew he was upset, he couldn’t shake the feeling that Koki enjoyed the time they spent together.
It almost took an hour or so but finally they arrived at the hotel. Jin and Koki thanked the man who drove off. After a bit of awkward silence, Koki sighed.
“We don’t tell the others this,” he said. Jin nodded slowly. Koki turned to enter the hotel but he hesitated. The rapper turned to Jin and let out a heavy sigh. “Even though we nearly got killed, and I got mistaken for a Mexican again, I did had a good time with you. But you’re still an idiot.”
Jin smiled brightly and nodded.
