The Christmas Door Contest!

So we had another door decorating contest for the Christmas Holiday, and once again I enlisted the help of the Japanese Club to do it. This year, I bought a Japanese Christmas Crafts book at BookOff in NYC and decided on a bunch of crafts, but when it came down to it, we ended up doing only one of the projects, cause they were so slow about it. XD

Originally, i was going to do Angels, Kimonos, and stars, all made from washi paper, but after I brought it to school I realized a very important fact: washi paper is EXPENSIVE and my door was gonna be trashed by the end of the break. x.x;

So I made an executive decision and we did only the angels, and we used Christmas wrapping paper instead of washi paper - but darned if it didn't come out nicely anyway!

This is a picture of the entire door - students made each individual angel by folding a rectangular piece of wrapping paper in half, gluing it together, and then making a fan out of it. We cut the fan in the middle, folded down the sides, and created the wings. The heads were supposed to be made of wooden beads with painted faces, but they would have been too heavy for the lighter paper - and wouldn't have stayed on the door - so I rolled a white piece of paper into a cylinder and had a student draw different faces on them.

This is a picture of a close up of some of the angels. You can also see I used golden pipe cleaner to make the neck and halos. :)

I made the star at the top using the washi paper - the folding and gluing involved would have been beyond what my students could do, so I just made the one and put it on top.

Then of course, the finishing touch was the greeting along the side of the door - I'm sure you can all read it or guess what it says:

Once again... I won. Once again... a hollow victory. XD There were only two other entries. One of them was a constuction paper Christmas Tree with key words for the New York State English Regents Exam on it (a state test my students have to take) and another door that had a purple background, with a gold garland around the frame, and a red stocking in the middle.

.... sigh. XD

Once again, we had a pizza party to celebrate. But this time, I got an extra reward - 2 free movie tickets! :) Woo hoo! So I guess even though I had to "share" the victory with 2 other doors, it was still a nice win. :D

I wonder if we have to decorate for Valentine's Day? I'm thinking about creating a door that shows Valentine's Day and White Day, to show the tradition that's in Japan. Just not sure yet how to design it yet. ^.^;
