First, you don't need to join: stories are sent to me via email and then I post them to the community. It's okay if you send it in a little late, but you do get two months to write just 1000 words. If it's just a little under 1000 words (like 900) then that's okay, but under that and they'll be sent back for editing. People will be writing for you, so it's just commom courtesy to write your best in return. In terms of experience, it doesn't really matter, but you should feel comfortable with your writing to be able to present it to other people. A pinch hit (in this situation) means being able to write a story last-minute for a participant whose allocated writer has not submitted their story.
