The house never ceases to be confusing.
So the power on the upstairs circuit kept tripping randomly -- not when some additional device was turned on. This made no sense.
We think we may have discovered what caused this. Someone stuck the pin to a pair of fingernail/toenail clippers into the grounding hole in one of the outlets.
The first question asked, that being "What the HELL?" ..that's probably the best question one could ask.

Okay, so that didn't fix it. The fact that the entire upstairs is on one circuit probably has something to do with the problem though.
